Mobile grinding

Bit of an odd one today.

Had some random French bloke come in, asking if we had any cutters that needed sharpening...tooling that needed regrinding and so forth.
They work from a lorry, apparently, and were in the area.
Gave him a few old rotabroach cutters, drills and a couple of little bits of tooling to tidy up. Came back with them late this afternoon, certainly looked good....reground and re-blacked. From what i could make out, he was saying the edges had been re hardened also, very poor English.

He had a small hatchet with him too.... Asked for some scrap, then proceeded to take lumps out of a bit of angle iron with it.... still stayed sharp enough for him to take a scraping from his fingernail to show how sharp it was still..... then he said that if it did need to be resharpened, it wasn't a problem, and he walked over to our linisher and ground a bit off it... whilst wearing a suit- sparks flying all over it

Looks good on the surface, but all a bit strange....I wouldn't be sending him off with a few grands worth of press tooling in the hope he brings it back

We had a few deliveries/customers in at the time too, certainly got them all looking

they might be on to a winner if they give good service and do a good job . just make sure they dont nash off with your gear never to be seen again

Haha, sounds exactly the same bloke we had in last year, maybe even the year before. Never saw the lorry, just some battered old car.

He wandered straight into the workshop, unannounced, with the axe out in front of him, I saw out of the corner of my eye two of the lads pick hammers up and start walking over. Think i might have mentioned it on here at the time.

We gave him a handful of old knackered drills, came back, as you say, razor sharp, blacked, oiled and wapped up. Didn't trust him with anything else and sent him packing. I had to get quite verbally forceful as i remember to get rid of him.

Gets about doesn't he.

but were they sharpened properly and was the price right??

He came to our place last Friday, charges something like £2.50 per cm of sharpening.Pair of upholstery scissors would cost about £30, can buy new ones for £25.

Yeah, he muttered on about some vague pricing structure per cm of sharpening. He did the samples FOC then i got rid of him. Something wasn't right about him. (Plus his breath stunk!)
IIRC the drills he sharpened were alright but one of the big ones shattered when i used it.

Used to be a guy went round Birmingham in the 60/70's, would park his van with a grinder in the back in the local high street for the day and would soon have a queue of folks with knives, scissors, shears etc. to sharpen.
