Belt Sander

I have an old Elu 4" belt sander that's served me well for a very long time. Recently it has started juddering and now leaves horrible marks and a rippled finish when sanding

Can anyone shed any light as to what may be wrong?

Well the first port of call is stripping it down to see where the wear is obviously.

That is the plan but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of this bit of kit so efforts could be a little more focused

If it's of a similar design to our Wolf 4" then possibly the graphite base pad has worn out or in our case the plastic coating on the rollers had had it's day and was parting from the cast rollers in chunks. Other than that then maybe the roller bearings may need replacing?

It's quite an old machine and takes an odd size of belt that are difficult to source, 560mm

Can you recommend reputable supplier

I don't see the logic in waiting around for someone to say it might be this it might be that when you could have it srtripped within the hour and finding out what it is.

the plastics might be fractured it does happen specially where a bearing is encased,the B&D sanders are known for this and the case just shatters when a knot is hit.

Isn't it better to conduct some research and have a vague idea of what's going on before taking things apart, some things might not be so obvious, even when opened up

Seems obvious enough for me,ie the roller/s that carries the belt is worn in the shaft housing hence the ripple in the cuts.

But thats just an educated guess.

Whats the model type/number? if you can source an exploded diagram that would help to see how its put together.

Could be something as simple as a bearing gone dry, it happens, could be the the plate on the bottom that supports the sanding belt, given its age it would appreciate a bit tender loving care, theres also a guide for the belt to to track against, if the belt is not adjusted correctly, they wear out, and the belt digs in. Just so many many possibles. first port of call partial strip, drive belt off, try running the motor and also turn sanding drive train by hand (the big round bits the belt fits on) . Are they free to turn???????????

Very usefull advice and pointers chaps, been a little distracted today, small issue of grouting the bathroom floor tiles. I'm going for a pint then will come back to this

I would also say just strip it down, oil anything that needs it and look for the obvious and keep going until its sorted...

I can supply 75 x 560 or 100 x 560 in lots of 10 belts per grit in Aluminium Oxide or premium Zirconia (best for steels).bad joints will cause vibration,cheers,john.
