There must have been a short somewhere to cause that surely? A gap between the probe and the internal pad would be no different then between the probe and the contact you were testing as you touched them together.

its the only explanation i can think of, i checked all cables involved and all are fine, results from megger are spot on, no bad connections or breaks etc. i tried pulling probe back out to proper length and the whole thing came out, plastic lug an all, then i noticed there is no soldered joint at all, just the probe touching on metal. pulled a brand new pair of the same probes apart and exactly the same there too

on a job today, guy had tried to install his own bathroom light, made a bit of a job of it, trimmed wires back for no reason at all and nearly set his house on fire as he was working live with no idea what he was doing. reckons he tripped mcb about 15 times before his missus demanded he ring someone

i was testing for voltage and this happened. as far as i can tell, the connection inside the probe is merely a bit of steel butted up against a pad to form the connection. this must have come a bit loose and caused an arc. big blue flash, breaker tripped and i ended up with this probe. surprisingly it still works fine, although i used a different pair to finish the job

cheap Chinese £2 probes for you

no chance anything inside the probe caused that, the meter only tests voltage and no real current passes throught them, looks to me as though you have eathed or shorted the probe against something

Agreed - with nowhere for the current to flow there isn't really anything to arc.

Just done my 17th edition regs exam and missed by one question














from getting 100%.
60 questions and I got one wrong in special locations, so 59 out of 60 left me on 98.3%. I was gutted.

Don't think I'd bother saving 8 quid getting cheap Chinese probes when I'm hanging off the end and they are in/ around anything up to 440volts!

There are some things I don't mind going cheap on, but things like this aren't!

the verdict on test leads. the 25 quid fluke leads are good . amprobe 4.0mm 9 quid ones arent bad but there not a briliant fit in the megger and can give false readings the chinese 2 quid ones the plugs dont reach properly in the megger but they fit ok on the avo multimeter
