"Shipyard tig" Is this real?

ChuckE2009 put a post on facebook asking people to comment questions for him to answer in his next video. Someone commented this:

have you ever ran/herd of shipyard tig. it is when you turn you're mig welder up alittle more and weld but as you weld you take a stick electrode and you dab it like tig

Surely it's not real but someone just messing around. Has anyone on here heard of this?

I have done this using gas welding rods playing about with surface textures on sculptures.
Easier than I expected, give it a go.

That's with a gas rod, designed to be dipped but dipping a stick electrode would cause a really bad slag incursion I would think. How did your surface textures come out btw?

It worked fine, I was doing surface welds, where a substructure of bars is given a skin of weld. A pain to do but it looks lovely

i have been told this at some point as well

more than 10 mins ago so i cant remember who, why or where i was told it memory of a gold fish and thats on a good day

ive fed old tig rods into a mig puddel, when building stuff up before. quite the reason why i'm not sure of, dosent seem to build up any faster than turning the wire feed up. seem to be abel to get marginaly more weld down with less heat.

on the upside if gave practice of feeding tig wire, and makes squirty welding a bit more intresting and diffrent when bored.

also mucking about pokeing diffrent filler wires in you can get some really funky looking welds and colours ( tho i bet the metalurgy would be scary if it was holding anything heavy up )

I've seen it done, when I was on my welding course at college, the instructor talked about this method (he said its not advised but if needs must, wink, wink) for filling large gaps in vertical joints.

He demonstrated it, remove the flux from the hand fed rod, strike up the arc and feed in the rod to the top of the weld pool/arc and don't have damp gloves

I saw a video the other day of someone doing this with a stick welder and a Tig filler rod

Why not just put a tig rod or unfluxed electrode in the joint, and stick weld over it ?

Did it to help fill in gaps welding a floor pan in a Ford truck. There was no joint per se. Rust meeting rust was covered in Farm Code 1974. As an aside my Daughter kicked the carpet loose on the floor and about jumped up on the seat when She could see the road going by through an apple sized hole in the floor.

Aye, it's real enough, but you have to use "Prairie Rods".
