Tauco drill as found Friday in a junk pile ..

A bit of google and help from the model engineer forum tells me this is made in Milwalke usa and came over in 1940 on a wartime shipment, the brass plate shows the government contract.

Slow down matey. Getting down to bare metal that quickly makes it look like the rest of us drag our heels. Should be a nice bench drill once done. What did you use for getting the paint off? I'm guessing something subtle like a brass wheel?

That looks like a cracking bit of kit ,hows the motor ?....jeff...

Its works, the motor is a Thompson Houston one third horsepower, I'm just going to strip it down and clean out the dust ,and grease the bearings.

The whole thing has minimal wear, and doesn't need any work, it will be going straight in my workshop.

I stripped the paint with a 115mm grinder and a wire wheel brush. In the corners of castings I use a pencil wire brush in a right angle drill.

I'm thinking gloss black. Though I might be tempted to leave it bare iron if clear lacquer will keep it rust free ?

There's 2 , 10 mm steel plates going, about 2.5 x 4 m, ( a questimate ) probably cost more to transport to the scrappy than they're worth. The owner needs to get rid asap. In Milton Keynes.

Not half. We spend our time trying to get hold of stuff like this, and some can't wait to get shut of it by whatever means possible. Just goes to show how people differ.

Dont know about you but i cant help looking in the metal skip at the tip even if i've just gone with grass clippings..........There's often some great gear chucked in there

Yeah, our old tip had a big scrap pile that you could rummage in for good bits. Then it was closed and opened as a recycling centre and now it all goes in a skip that you can't touch. I still get a few bits and bobs from the age concern shop next door but it relies on people stopping there and offering stuff rather than just driving past and dumping it so a lot of good stuff just gets crushed. It makes me a bit cross...

i took some scrap metal down once . some i wanted to keep so i put it to one side and emptied me trailer . was putting my other suff back in and a guy came over and said put it back on the pile i told him it was mine and he wasnt having it .so i told him to get knotted and shoved him out of the way with a few more choice words

Last time i was at the tip, i was up on the walk way, looking into the metal skip, just sight seeing, and still the chap started yelling at me!

I was almost keen on just standing there, and telling him to call the police...

The worst thing I ever saw was just after the new "recycling" centre opened. The contract to run the shop hadn't yet been awarded, so everything was being junked. I looked into the wood skip and there were several violins. The staff weren't impressed either, one of them pointed out the skip next door which contained things that cannot be recycled. The violin cases were in that one, separated from the fiddles so as not to contaminate the wood pile. I was absolutely fuming, I don't think I've ever seen such deliberate vandalism.

Do you live in the Netherlands by any chance? Because that is exactly what happens here also.

The whole 'recycling' business with local councils is a huge joke. If you can find the right man to 'bung' I think you can get away with it. I've seen a small white van literally stuffed with Dyson vacs at our local tip and they obviously weren't going to any 'authorised' recyclers. And as for the little stashes you see here and there....their own personal recycling, no doubt.
I would like to see what goes on inside the big shed at our tip where all the electrical and electronic stuff goes. I don't think its for keeping all that nasty lead-filled solder away from us public so we don't poison ourselves. More like all the usable stuff goes on ebay.

Our local tips (devon) hook out anything salable, and flog it from little shacks on site. Its all semi-proper, but they still seem to think theyre doing everyone a favor.

I picked up a spanner once, and told the chap that it was worth 50p to me (before he had mentioned a price) which offended him greatly... "We set the prices here, not you... " etc.

I did not point out that i was not setting the price, just informing him on what it was worth 'to me' - which may not be the same as it may be worth to someone else....


I dont know why the 'power' they have goes to their heads in the way it does. Its been that way for years.



ps. funny how you never notice any copper in the metal skip, or in the site 'shop' - wonder where all that goes!
