Looking round on the online machine auctions for one.

Never seen one in person so...anyone got one and are they noisy?

Morticer. They're not noisy. In essence, all they are is an auger drill bit running within a square chisel like cutter which slices out the corners and trues the edges from the hole drilled by the auger, so the motor is the only part which is essentially creating any noise. The old Rexon ones were apparently quite a sturdy little unit, if you're browsing the second hand bench top market. The next step up from those is usually the industrial units like Sedgwick's etc.

I've found most of the time I can get a better bargain in certain tools through industrial/machine auctions.

I guess if the motors induction then yaeh it should be quiet enough.

Car Boot sales are better even than those, but I'm lazy and you have to be up early to get the best deals eBay can be handy when people advertise stuff badly though.

My missus bought me one for my 40th birthday, not used it a lot but when I do it saves loads of time, its an Axminster of Chinese origin, very heavy casting, a bit rough around the edges but good enough. Its not noisy.

Drills are noisier too. A half decent morticer you could use all day long without the minimal noise it generates becoming irksome. Some drills however would drive you to distraction within no time. Plus you lose the compound table facility of a morticer when using a drill stand.

The biggest noise you wil experience will be the chatter of the bit inside the square chisel, and it will not matter if its in a pedastal drill with a morticing attchment or if its in Mortice machine. I`ve used a Mortice attachment on a Pillar drill for over 30 Years never had any problems, timber is held in a 6" cross vice. Ive also used professional machines, chain chisels, square chisels, even an old Thumper mortice machine!!,muti head chain morticers,cutting a seriers of mortice holes in a door style in one single down stroke. Pays ya money takes ya choice. Depends how many mortice holes you expect to cut, A hand held router can produce excellent results and when plunged from both sides of the timber the hole is perfectly central, then either cut the round edges left from the router bit out with a chisel or round the shoulders of the tennon. Again circumstances will dictate your choice. I tried the small Mortice machines likes of axminster in the example, and its a reasonable small mortice machine for an enthusiast. Nothing more. A mortice machine is a very very dedicated single use machine.
When I get in the shed I`ll stick a pic up of my pillar drill and attchment.

Ive been reading the Axminster reviews and noticed complaints about the chisel overheating-- if this is happening you have not adjusted the clearence of the bit in relation to the chisel-- its too tight, make the gap bigger. It appears the machine is bored to take 3/4 Diam square chisels up to 3/4 Square on the one I read, if you have smaller Diam chisels simply make a reducer, similarly if the bit is too small for the deidcated chuck make a reducer for it as well, I can help you out if need be- even professional machines use them. Its no big deal.

Morticing attachment for a Pillar drill == Thats the same model as mine just a nice new version, I`ll be honest I didnt like the clamping arrangement to hold the timber material in place, you will find on the up stroke when morticing considerable force is needed to withdraw the chisel and bit from the hole, thats why I just use a cross vice to hold the timber in place, you`ll see in the pic, other than your hand force keeping the timber in place there is little else stopping any "lateral" movement. The hook clamps help keep it pressed against the fence, nothing stops it mooving the other way., You`ll need to check the Diam of the Collar on your drill, see if its a compatable size with the attachment. Mine needed a reducer to allow the collar to clamp up to the drill.

Fair criticizem, the yoke is very, very handy, as I said clamping bits and bobs I found useless.Mine is cast steel of some probably chinease origie even given its age, I too bored the supplied diam in the yoke for chisels out to 3/4"

Ah bollix,I've just had a look in the spare room for an old B&D drill stand I had for ages,can't see it so must have thrown it out? could have knocked up a morticer with a motor I have and the drill stand.
