Copper is better than ally, it's heavier so you don't need to put so much effort in to each blow which improves accuracy.
My dad is still using his home made copper mallet 70 years after he made it, I bought a "Thor" which is now probably my most used hammer.

I would agree on the copper but I think there is a lot more to it than just weight, I think ali is a bad choice it will be effected by cracking before copper.
Not to forget leather too for the really delicate stuff.
Waldershelf I don't think your dad has used his copper mallet much TBH. It's one of those tools that if used often won't last that long, probably one of the most replaced tools in the toolmaker trade.
FWIW both the flavours of ally mentioned are harder than pure copper* and 6082-T6 is the softer of the two- about half way between annealed pure copper and 2014-T6. Personally i'd always go with 'soft faced' rather than making the entire head from copper or whatever... easier to control the weight/balance of the thing, the soft faces can be changed if/when necessary etc
