Paint Polishing

Hi there
Can someone kindly explain what this is about? and why?

If you have a high gloss finish but there are a number off dust particals in the finish,is this where the polishing comes into spraying? or is it just to get an even flat gloss finish?

there not much on about the polishing in the paint forum or this paint and metal coatings forum to understand where the polishing comes into spraying.

for dust specs or orange peel you need to smooth it first with fine grade wet paper like 1500-2000 then bring back the shine with a coarse polish /cutting compound

Sounds like a lot of work,think I would rather wet sand it again and make sure the dust is not disturbed on the final coat.
Just curious about why there's a need for polishing and if its just dust and orange peel problems then I will take the time to make sure the dust is sucked out of the shed with an extractor,have not run into the orange peel effect yet but thats because I am using the aerosols at the moment till I have all the components together to build a DIY compressor,just waiting for another 25ltr or 50ltr reciever tank to emerge on ebay.

Oo! ay next doors windows are new,I have heard stories and believe me I am not averse to danger but calor gas bottles? ooooh no not for me mate. :-)

there probably just that stories. i built mine out of one 45 years ago and still going strong i was told they would explode and they would bust and the ends blow out with the pressure . wot a crock o sh..ite .if u intend to suck the dust out of your shed u will pull a load more in . your better off blowing the dust out with your airline let it settle then spray the floor with a bit of water then get spraying

How do you work out how much pressure cut off those bottles need? you know the pressure switch,do you rely on what it says on the bottle?

pressure depends on what your compressor pump is rated to .some are 150 psi some are 120psi max the gas bottle tank will take over 150 psi no problems there twice the thickness of a standard compressor tank

The floor of the shed has laminate flooring down so keeping it wet not good,was in two minds to set up a rail around the ceiling level and fit two shower curtains to pull around the inside of the shed when spraying but don't know if those plastic shower curtains attract dust and harbour it?

Just use the static plastic on a roll normally used for masking then throw it away when finished, it is cheap and comes in various widths. I have painted a mk1 mini in a garage and have had a few learning curves along the way, I have used 2k gloss though but dust nibs are unavoidable no matter what you do, I have found the abralon p4000 good for final flatting after coarse sanding but am still to master the art of polishing and what compounds to use, g3 doesn't touch hs 2k but think its fine for 1k finishes, I am about to order some different pads and compound after speaking to polished bliss, so hopefully will have an easier job of it then. Even a pro body shop can get a few dust nibs to deal with.

I did an experiment with polishing,just sprayed a couple of coats on a plastic surface with a few dust particals.

Polished the surface after 2 days with original T-cut and it gave a very smooth surface less dust particals with a shine but not glossy enough but you could see yourself in the shine.

I know T-cut is to restore the colour but it is after all a cutting compound,I should have done a second cut and see if that would have made it glossier?

Forgot to say that it was only hand polished and maybe a power buffing polish would have brought it out better?

T-Cut is like WD-40. A triumph of marketing over function. G3 followed by G10 should do the job and no ammonia to bother about.
