20 plate discovery

Hi I have been offered a disco 02 plate with 140 k and fsh , it has never been off road and is in good nick, however there is a "noise "at 1600 rpm, there is no transmission noise or fall off in power, the noise is not evident above or below this engine speed and it is there when driving or stationary,Q what cold it be? Also the price is £2000,is this about right?

you will have to define the noise a bit more and a rough idea of its location i.e. engine, gearbox, diffs etc

HI, Its a knock/rattle from the torque converter area, apart from that it seems all good, tows a caravan effortlessly.

bottom of bellhousing look in through the inspection plate and see if the torque converter has any cracks or bolts missing,

torque plate might be cracked fits between the flywheel and the torque converter
but it's either engine or gearbox out to replace it

my father had a rover with similar symptom, think it was as octo says but not 100% sure, was a few years ago

Only you can say whether you are willing to take a risk it's a £50 job and not a £1500. Would you be doing the work yourself using second hand parts or garage with new bits ? Quick look on eBay shows similar vehicles with lower mileage for around £2500 so with the potential for bill to solve the as yet unconfirmed problem I'd say £2000 is starting point to negotiate downwards.

Check the front crank pulley for any play as well

The OP doesn't say it's an Auto, Autos are far less common in D2 than they are in D3. The flex plate issue would only apply to an auto.

Now the possibly useful bit, my 1999 TD5 manual has what I suspect is the same issue. There is a whine around 1600-1800 RPM which isn't there before or after. I had imagined all manner of expensive time consuming bits like dual mass flywheel etc.
I removed my auxiliary belt and started it up briefly and the noise is gone so it is either the ACE pump,PAS pump(PAS also drives the water pump but I have replaced my water pump with a genuine one), aircon pump or alternator(was replaced a while back again with a genuine one). I'm pretty sure the noise changes on mine when I turn the steering wheel so I think it's the PAS pump.

It's not my daily driver and as it doesn't affect the vehicle I haven't dug any further

mine makes that noise, it could be the downpipe rattling like mine does
