Carbon Filter for Spraying?

in the uk I used to have problems, but have cured them by using a water filter housing filled with sillica gel dessicant

Hmm I wonder if you could use that for a carbon filter??
Need to find a source of activated carbon in a suitable grade for filtering 2k nasties.

do you mean as in 2 pac paints? of my understanding it is possible to spray paint with a sundstrom brand carbon mask being the only manufacturer to say there mask will do it. but if your going to put carbon in filter housing you have a few options in choice of carbon media and weather its granular or catridge style. if it is in granular form (GAC granular activated carbon) which comes pre packaged in a catridge filter style which will fit in to cartridge filter housing like you see it that post it has a screw lid and with the filter media poured into it (actually be an easyer way to do the air dryer above if it was filled with desicant) you can by this carbon in 25kg bags and refill it your self there is no way to wash it this way so you have to dump it once used. there is a bigger choice of media's you can buy the best is burnt coconut husk but there is about 8 to chose from that all perform better in diferent task depending what your trying to filter out e.g. crushed coal carbon is better at oils and the like. if you don't want to use the cartridge style container and make it with a dip tube like pictured in that post make syre you have the flow going from the out side to inside if it is in opposite direction you will just push carbon down the line also the dip tube will need some sort of screen over the openings in it to stop carbon going up that like flyscrean epoxied on to it maybe or stainless mesh is you can get your hands on that this will filter particals down to 15 to 20 microns that's about a thousandth of an inch.

if you want to go finer then that say 1 micron which is a millionth of an inch because your trying to filter out finer particals you need a catridge filter and there is a few types of these but you cant chose what type of carbon media. the best of these is extruded carbon which is pushed into a cylindrical shape and cut to length they are litrialy a block of compresed carbon and work the best. then there is silver impregnated catridges which help kill bactiria and followed closely by sediment/carbon catridge filters these just last a little longer when used in waterbecause they have an outer layer that protects the carbon from being blocked by particals prematurely. and lastly there is the nasty pleated carbon filter its a paper filter I think they wave over a bag of carbon and hey presto you have a waste of money, stay away from them I work in the filtration industry and don't even stock them there rubish

you also have a choice of filter housing either a 2.5 inch or a 4inch housing. the one pictured is a 4 inch housing and obviously hold a bigger filter they don't do a beter job they just last longer between filter changes but if you want to go the granular GAC option they only come in a 4 inch catridge. also you can fit a 2.5 inch catridge in a 4inch housing but not the other way around.

when using any carbon filter it needs to be flushed, that means the first bit of water you run through it the water will come out black and you have to run it till it runs clear. if you were to use it with air I suppose the same applies but I have never used it with air so would be a learning curve for both of us. if your useing the catridge style maybe you can flush it with water first let it dry then use it on air or if you go the granular option just dump the media into a bucket hand wash it pour it through a strainer and let it dry then put it back in to the GAC container and then install that into the catridge housing. hope all this helps

I'm basically fed up with paying £40 for the filter for my air fed mask. I took one apart and there's very little carbon in it.
you can buy a 1kg bag of carbon for about £10 so I am trying to find the right type of carbon for this application.

The grade is 12X30AW from what I've gathered so far but haven't identified whether it's coconut shell, coal or rubber etc. or which one to use for removing the isocyanates in 2k paint.

The idea of using a water filter appealed as it seemed easier, the other option is to use a spare air filter (or one of the in-line spray gun filters) with the filter in and fill the bowl with carbon. Either option would give me more carbon in the air path than the standard filter.

I'm still trying to find the exact type of carbon and a supplier. You can buy the granulated (which is the type I think I need) or pelleted carbon on ebay for aquarium application but I'm not sure if this would be correct.

As it's a health issue I'm playing safe until I can get the correct information.

none, air fed masks don't filter out the isocyanates they filter the air from your compressor which shouldn't be pulling in paint mist

google for your local water treatment/filtration supplyer and take the stuff down that you got out of your filter in a bag they are visually identifyable by looking at them and there texture. and when you pack it in cut a wooden disk from ply wood that just fits inside the air filter to use as a pressing plate and squeeze it in with out cracking the filter housing then top it up and repeat until its packed in tight as its the volume you need in there and it will stop any unfiltered air passing around the media you might need some sort of breathable paper or thin wadding to help keep it in as well.

sorry buddy didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. its called "takeing the ****" might be a suthern hemisphere/convict thing, but in short if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck......its usually a duck. I.E. I thought that would sound stupid enough for any one to work out that it was not true advice to be taken seriously specialie after the effort put into a honest truth full post but nothing more then humour wrapped up in an idiot with confidence.
