Axle thread repair

I have 2 axles to repair on an ifor Williams livestock trailer. The farmer has replaced the bearings but managed to strip the threads. Not sure how but a bit pipe laying beside the trailer is maybe good evidence! I have ran a die up them but they are too badly gone. What's the best way to go to repair them bearing in mind it will be a nightmare to remove the axles. It's not really a road going trailer just to transport livestock between farms

I was thinking of running some small beads along the length of the thread trying to grind down near enough the o/d of the shaft and running a die back up. Open to all ideas though!

u could try filing down the damaged threads and then measure the shaft for od. get a zeus thread chart book look which thread type pitch and od to the size u have filed it to then re thread it with a die and get a nut to suit

are you talking about axle / wheel stud threads ? if so just replace the stud ?

Put the nut on then weld it

If you weld the threads and then try running the die along I think you will struggle as weld tends to be quite hard.

As above,Same suggestion as BrightSpark,You should be able to find a die to suit the filed diameter, What approx size was the original?

The old treatment was to cut the damaged thread with a hacksaw,or use a dremel with a very thin blade

Done the hacksaw or thin disc many times for damaged threads,but if the thread is stripped then a slightly small size would be called for,

The thread is 3/4 UNF. Might still try to lay welds on maybe just where it's stripped and try to run a die up. Would like to keep it the original size if possible. Failing that brightspark I will try your method and try to file it down and use a different size thread. Not sure why it's a fine thread for.

if its carbon steel watch it dont cool down to quick. if u do sometimes it hardens the steel and wont re thread

You might be able to file it down a little to take18mmX1,5mm, The pitch is almost the same as 3/4"unf.

The last time I looked at an Ifor Williams price list the bare axle beams seemed cheap and good value, if replacement for any reason become necessary, I'd check the prices before going any further.

If the trailer is used on a public road at all to transport live stock between farms, it doesn't matter how short the distance is it should be in a road worthy state. There's a difference between welding up a split in the body or repairing the ramp, imo welding up and re-cutting the threads that hold the wheel hub on isn't one of them.

If you can't recover the axle threads with a die then the axle beam have been damaged, replace them...

ZZR1200 I understand that totally. Not that long ago a young mother was killed from a trailer coming attached not far from here. Trailers and being roadworthy is a big grey area. This trailer has no brakes what so ever for starters but getting farmers to pay for stuff is impossible.

I know there was a call to get trailers MOT but I am sure the farming lobby managed to get it stopped.

Your problem is that if the "Farmer's Trailer" loses a wheel and someone is injured/killed, the farmer will simply say that he paid you to repair any fault the trailer had and you guaranteed your work, so the HSE, Police, VOSA and all the Lawyer's, will be knocking on your door...

There are times when a good dose of sorry, you need a new parts, is the only safe answer and if it needs new brakes quote for those as well....

" Trailers and being roadworthy is a big grey area" it isn't a grey area at all, the law requires them to be maintained in road worthy condition, the problem is that at the moment there's no requirement to have them tested annually, so people don't bother, but it will come one day the EEC will see to that...

I assume we are talking about wheel studs, don't bother messing about with them just replace them the possibility of loosing a wheel isn't worth the tiny saving of re threading then making new nuts with a cone to fit the wheel.

the threads are on the main axle not the wheel nuts and cant be removed easily hence file down slightly and re threading them wont be a safety issue

That doesn't sound like a farm trailer with a 3/4 axle! More like 4"!

the threads on the end wont be the same size as the axle there a fair bit smaller look here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Build-You..._Camper_Parts_Accessories&hash=item564430c8a3there only holding the bearings in not taking the weight
