Callipers painting

Hi I'm going to sand blast the callipers of my w123 merc and I know I've got to use high temperature paint but what primer do I have to use?

I applied high temp paint to my 34 Hornet special exhaust from a spray can, it didn't need any primer

1 coat etch and 2 coats smoothrite

Primer isn't a necessity, in most cases. It has its uses, but most paints will adhere to a properly prepared surface without it.

Thanks for all the suggestions powder coating sounds great but I don't have the equipment...I think I'll go with hammerite smooth I will post pictures of my progress.

where do you live outer mongolia, I live in Pontefract, the only thing that could be called heavy industry is two sweet factories but there are 5 powder coaters within 3 miles of here. Ian

Powder coat them.

Just pick the right powder coater, some are good and will blank off the bits that shouldn't be coated, but others are not so good. I had to leave some taper bearing outer races in a swingarm as they were down blind holes, but they coated them and told me their coating was harder than steel and would be fine, yeah right

Yes I do realise that Powder coaters are like the powder coat come in lots of shades. To do any job on brake callipers they need to be properly blanked off where needed. When I had mine done I used old bolts into threads that needed it and for the cylinders I packed then with paper and used Gaffer tape to fully seal the cylinder boors.

VHT Caliper Paint, they do a clear lacquer too. If you go down this route or use any paint that needs heat curing, pre-heat the calipers in the oven for the recommended time before painting so that any gas given off from the porous casting can escape or you might get bubbles in the paint when curing or the calipers get hot in use.

2 rite as said a couple of coats of smoothrite will be fine and it will stand the heat. i painted the barrels on my norton with it and its still on after 5 years

Calipers don't get that hot when I refinish brake discs I bead blast and then 2x red oxide, 2x grey primer, 2x colour and then 2x clear laquear all from a Simoniz rattle can and have no probs I also paint brake drums the same way with no probs. I will however say that smooth rite can take some serious heat as I had some on the exhaust down pipe as overspray on my Polo when I had it and that stayed on for well over a year with no cleaning let alone prep on the pipe.

I wouldn't recommend the paint that Halfords sell as 'caliper enamel'; granted I'm no Picasso with a paintbrush but that stuff was dire.

Halfords did a brilliant heat resistant satin black spray paint a few years back but stopped selling it, I did a bike silencer with it as a quick tidy up and it lasted forever.

Been doing my calipers with 2 coats of 2k epoxy primer and then a couple of coats of 2k colour on top, been doing it that way for 25 years now and never had any paint come off or discolour.
