110v from a 240v supply

Is there a way i can have a 110v outlet from a 240v 32amp ring main,is there some sort of mini transformer/outlet i could rig up and use?
Reason being,i have only the one 110v tool and fed up lugging/kicking the tranny around the shed floor and bench,i dont mind having to do so when outside,just a PITA with it inside.

The easiest way would be to mount your existing transformwer where it won't be in the way.

I simply have a long 110V extension lead so the transformer never moves

That is the sensible idea yes,but you know as well as i do in a small little shed/workshop full of clutter thats never possible,lol
Just thought there might be a sort of plug in or wire in outlet i could rig up.
May i add its a 110v 2000w chop saw

If there was such a unit it would be the same size as your site transformer anyway.

That's the last thing you'd want.

1) the voltage dropped would depend on the current drawn, so you'd have to alter the resistance to suit each particular appliance.
2) you'd dissipate as much power in the resistance as the appliance takes, in this case 2KW, which would waste electricity and possibly be a fire risk.

They could call that an electric fire because it would be dissipating 2Kw whilst the saw was being run

IDEA: try and find a 110v 2kw electric fire and wire that in series with the chop saw, it would help keep you warm in winter

Just make up a short extension lead, and mount the transformer in a corner or under the bench. Leave the 110 lead plugged in, just switch the box on an off as required.

And don't forget your transformer is centre tapped earth....

Back in the 1950s, dropper leads were common on radios and TVs that had come over from the USA. But they're frowned upon now, as they are a fire risk. Far better to use the proper isolating transformer that you're already using. As others have said, mount the transformer somewhere out of the way (how about up in the roof space if floor/wall space is limited?), and run cables to where you need it.

My workshop has a 110V transformer in a cabinet on the wall feeding a number of yellow Commando sockets mounted about the place - thanks to the previous owner who also felt the need to have three-phase and piped air...

I recovered the guts from a smashed site transformer and built it into an enclosure for remote mounting at work, recovered it when the place shut down and now waiting in my shed to be installed.

with some kit it is possible to use a high current dioed, so instead of feeding 230v Aternating current, your infact feeding it half wave recityfied mains. so with the dioed in the the live feed it will only conduct for half of the cycel. it's very crude way of pwm drive in a ort of fasion. iven tho the voltage has doubled by only allowing half of each cycel to be conducted to the motor it is only being applyed for half of the time so the RMS power should be roughly the same.


i would recomend not doing this tho. even tho it's NOT DC its a damb sight closer to it and DC is more dangerorus than AC, it'll certanly negate any saftety advantage of 110v in even of a shock. i think the theory is sound it works with lamps, cant see why it wouldnt work with a series wound type motor thats found in most power toools

The voltage isn't doubled, the peak voltage remains the same so you could damage the motor. When you use this method on lamps the lamp voltage should still be 240v or whatever, the dimming effect is achieved because the lamp is being switched on and off quckly.

Also it IS DC because the current will only flow in one direction.

it's me not being very clear.

your supplying the device on double it's rated voltage but effectivly on a 50% duity cycel because it's being run on half wave.

out of curiosity i'm going to have to try it on some old 110v stuff that i don't mind liberating the magic smoke from but sure it will work. i know some cctv IR flood lights PWM feed a 110V tube with 230v somethign to do with 110v tubes have a filament made with a larger diamiter wire so will givw more light output in the IR range than a 230v tube. ( completly useless bit of info )

You could use an SCR and make sure it switches off before the peak voltage is reached. For a given wattage a 110v tube will have a thicker filament because it will draw twice the current of a 220v one.

I understand 24v vehicle bulbs don't last as long as 12v ones because they draw half the current and have thinner filaments.
