It tickles me though that these days such faith is put into such unreliable devices!

RCD's are one of the most, if not the most unreliable protective device that we use under BS7671 & we are being expected to use them more & more!!!

There is a research paper out there, which is quite valid, that shows how unreliable they are.

The main reason they are unreliable...

They are not "used" correctly by the end user, the designer, the specifier, the installer can do their bit, but, for an RCD to be any good long term, the user has to have their input to the situation, and, they don't!

Aye, but they just band 30mA ones in. Half of them don't even work when we test them! Adjustables would be nice, most of the gensets we use have them fitted.

The majority of the boards have 100mA ones in them, certainly the 125A and upwards have. The 32/3 boards tend to just have 30mA ones as they are at the end of the distribution tree.

If you are doing event stuff, remember that you must comply with BS7909, as well as BS7671, EAWR, PUWER, MHSWR and a fleet of other "stuff"!

I remember standing on stage at one gig, throwing out glow in the dark wrist bands cos the lighting rig had tripped out and the lampies were struggling to make it work again. Fun times. College sparks got pilled up and had a fight with some of the students in the carpark afterwards.

My neighbours dont seem to mind the music from my non Insulated gym, my evolution saws and angle grinders are loud as f*** though!

Ive decided to go the trunking route instead of having it in the wall,
Ive never plastered before so I dont really want to try between loads of sockets, rather just screw the things to the wall after, trunking seems cheap enough anyway.

So ill have trunking running around the top of the room with conduit pipe going to all the sockets.

Could just buy it myself and install it before hand to to save time aswell.

Remember, you don't HAVE to use steel trunking and conduit, pvc could possibly be OK.
Just use the right fittings and boxes to eliminate any gaps is one of the most important things.

Find a sparky who's happy for you to do the donkey work and go through what you want, need and where.

Screwfix/Toolstation are reasonably priced and convenient for plastic conduit, trunking and fittings.

Ill have a look at what I need now, seems simple enough to do that part myself and have all the wall sockets ready.
The electrician would most likely be happier if he doesnt have to do any of the donkey work, was when he saw I already dug the trench for the cable to my gym.

Looks OK, you could use the spare non-RCD protected spare way in the middle with the correct installation method, your sparky will confirm after a site visit.

plenty of space on the cu. If you do go down the protected route it is only sockets that will be taken out if anything trips, lighting wont be affected. All you need to hope is the missus isn't in the shower if your welder takes the rcd out

I reccomend fitting sockets in the ceiling (if ceiling is suitable etc), my double garage has 3 doubles down the centre line, I'm never more than 6' from a double socket.

I hate this method. they used it in the welding room in work and for the short period that I was a sparky there replacing the sockets after someone had tripped over a bit of box section, grabbed the cable hanging from the ceiling and ripped the sockets out was my most frequent job. think in a year I changed something like 48 sockets, which equates to nearly one a week
