if your gonna skimm the walls with finish plaster use a decent quality float. there best being rubbed up 1st with emery cloth to wear them in and take the edge off otherwise there crap and so will be the finish

Very good advice! I did mine with an oil stone, and I rounded the corners off a little too. After that it performed just like a nice old well worn in one.

Brand new ones are seriously rubbish until you bed them in. Don't ask me how I know that! And don't look at the plastering behind the fridge in my kitchen!

Buy a rubber bucket thing to mix the finish plaster in and also a mixer to go in a drill.

thanks for the tips though, maybe I should just grab a used float instead?

Plastering is the least of my worries at the moment though, have a upvc window and door to install first, never worked with them before.

I left a 5-10mmish (treated wood seems to be horribly warped unless ive just got a bad batch!) gap around the rough opening for the upvc door frame to fit into, am I right in thinking I just put enough packers inbetween the gap to make it level and plumb and spray foam in between?

Managed it without too much trouble, window beading is a b****.
Non conventional framing around the window because I ran out of timber but it seems to be fine.
got the roofing membrane up to keep the majority of the rain out, wouldve had all the ply up, filled and painted if the weather wasnt this poor.

just a personal thing but I wouldn't have located the welding table directly underneath the consumer unit. if you need to manoeuvre a long bit of box section and aren't paying attention that box is in a prime location for a whack.

I actually left a gap between so I could work from both sides of the table, so does give me a little room for error,
I dont think I can even fit 8ft peice of steel into the place though, being only 6ft high at the back and a normal door size is a little bit of an issue, will still have to weld anything large outdoors

In hindsight, I should've just asked my neighbour if they cared about it being higher ..
