Should I Buy This Compressor

Hi;

I have been offered this compressor for the sum of £50 question is should I buy it.
Its 2.5HP, 50 Litre, 150 PSI but not sure what the flow rate will be in CFM?

It was used for spraying and I am able to take it away and check it over before I commit.
If it's suitable at £50 should I snap it up?

I'd like to use it for spraying (don't have a ant Air Tools)

Its got a pretty old, odd style, quick release connection but this can be changed for a new PCL.

(The wheel is broken in the pic - easy fix I guess)

Found an old listing on ebay here that went for £84 and here for £53.01

Its got a pretty old, odd style, quick release connection but this can be changed for a new PCL.

That looks like an older style PCL socket, the current standard plug should fit.

Check the pump oil level. Has it been run low? From the pics it looks like it may not have oil in it! Check then give it a good run up before handing over the redies.

I agree, I have those old style fatter PCL sockets on my Snapon Compressor. Standard PCL connectors fit in fine

As long as it works then you have a bargain, it should be quieter than the direct drive ones and 50litre receiver will be ok for painting, I would take a feed from the tank at 1/2bsp and put a better filter regulator from this connection, the ones on top of tank with pressure switch are restrictive

Thanks for the replies fella's, looks like i'll take it. Off on holiday for a week but will grab it as soon as i'm back and clean it up / check it before I pay for it. We did run it up quickly, got up to about 5 Bar in minute or so I know it works.
Anyone know where I can download a manual / maint / user guide for this compressor?

From the advice in my other thread here I have gathered info on setting up an Air Line with a separate regulator and have just bought a few more bits and pieces (1/2 BSP to 1/4 BSP connectors, quick Release connector and some 15mm compression fittings.

I'll run a flexi pipe from the side of the tank, by passing the compressors regulator and connect into a water reducing system into a wall mounted regulator / Water Trap and then onto my gun.

If it's the same as the Clarke pump, the red dot indicates the minimum level, and it should be filled to the top of the window. I'd use SAE30 compressor oil (AFAIK it's the same as SAE30 non-detergent engine oil) unless you can find specific instructions to the contrary.

The oil just lubricates the pump by splash lubrication. There will be scoops on the big ends to fling the oil around - it's important that the pump rotates in the right direction. If the rings are worn you'll get oil in the air so a regulator/filter is always the best option. Put the filter as close to the point of use as you can, this gives maximum oportunity for oil & water to condense in the pipework, and the higher pressure in the pipes overcomes resistance to flow better than a low pressure. You get more mass per volume.

When I worked in the UK the theatre I worked at bought a compresser the same as the one in your photo from Halfords ... I used it for spray painting backcloths etc for shows ... it worked fine ,and still does 15 years later. If I lived in the UK I would buy it for that price... jeff...

point of interest , the instructions that came with this compressor said the red dot in the plastic window on the side of the pump is the correct oil level so check it out ......
