tried to change the clutch on my vw lt['98] today, everything easily accessible -just one hitch,i can't remove the gear lever ,i removed the m10 screw from the cab side ,then from underneath tried to knock a pin out that runs across ways ,thats too solid ,then i felt 4 spring loaded 'buttons' in the base of the gearstick,so compressed all 4 simultaneously & my partner pulling the stick it still won't budge,am i missing something,can anyone instruct me otherwise,help.

Faint memory of working on a car and struggling with the same problem, was finally told it could only be removed if the car was in a specific gear..think it was 4th, anyways once it was put into that gear it came out no problem at all.
Was a long time ago, probably a BMC something or other so doubtful it will be the same trick but you never know.

this was when I bought it. needed handbrake lever replacing as the button to release it had fallen inside

I have an lt 28 01 plate thrust bearing went in it and I've been doing some research into it there's a manual by Peter Russek called pocket mechanic vwlt done for all years, very handy!! It says pull up rubber gaiter round the gear stick ad there should be a clamp screw toward the dash side of the stick, the whole lot should lift out as one! Or so it says hope this helps oh yes also says that this will give you access to the upper transition bolts too. Good luck must do mine too!!
thats the screw i removed 1st -the lever won't budge,thanks will look up a manual,if not will have to wait until tomorrow when i will ask the garage i use .

well fancy then! what a nice helpful man he was.
as an update-once the lever is off theres a pair of very slim spanner flats under the lever maybe the idea is to twist the lever off with a spanner yet i doubt theres room to get one in there!! anyway new clutch in & it still crunches selecting reverse,so will try a new hyd'cylinder in case its not holding pressure,hoping it doesn't mean a worn reverse synchro'

Spanner flats are probably for assembly outside of the vehicle during the build process.
Try the bushes in the shift mechanism first. Now I have looked there does not seem to be any. Some bushes on mine are shared with the T4, the other had to be made.
If the crunching is only reverse, it is unlikely to be the clutch, that would affect all gears.
