Axle stand specs

Hi all, looking at build some axle stands, height being around 450mm, what base foot print should i go for, i am looking at doing a square base 4 outriggers as to the usual 3 and triangular base.

That will depened on the tightness of the inner tube to the outer and the size of the foot print i reckon ??

That will possibly affect the stability, but a four legged stand will need to be on a perfectly flat surface for it not to rock. A three legged stand won't rock at all, no matter what the surface is like. Three legged things simply CAN'T rock!

I'd go with three myself as that way all three feet are sharing the load equally (ish). Things with four feet do tend to rock unless all four feet are perfectly in line and the surface they're sat on is dead flat! No idea on base size I'm afraid. I'd guess something like a 30 degree included angle if it was for me.

At the minute i cant get my head around the 3 leg is more stable than 4 but accept your thoughts.

All the ones I have only have 3 feet

You know when you fold up a beer mat and stuff it under the leg of a wonky table to sure it up........

I built a pair of four legged stands. Mainly because I had some box section to hand. As above obviously if the floor has depressions then one leg can end up floating but I use mine quite a lot and have never felt unsafe, though my floor is pretty good.

Mine are probably a foot tall or just under when retracted and 18" on the top most height. Pretty sure opposite legs are a foot apart at the base but will measure tomorrow.

if it has 4 legs and one is floating by any amount, the weight isn't distributed evenly through the stand. If it has 3 legs all 3 of them have to be in contact with the floor, meaning all the weight is evenly distributed through the stand

and if it only had 3 it wouldnt wobble just go down halfords and machine mart and look at thers . why guess when u can just measure of bought ones i do it all the time , sometimes they get pi,,,ed off when u get the tape measure out and sketch them

I tried to cure a wobbly table by cutting one the legs off, that didn't work

i had a pair of builders tressles 3 foot high .cut the tops off and welded some v angles on top and lifted the car on top with this in stages

My stands are mostly 4 legged, I have very rough floors and have never found rocking a problem.

I have a pair of these 6 Tonne with a 410mm to 600mm height range. Comes with ratchet action for quick height adjusment. and below 30 quid

I've 4 pairs of those pictured above.

Can't fault them. If the ground is a little uneven, I tend to slip a 600mm square board of 25mm ply under the feet, works perfectly.
