cheap no frills 4x4

i joined a shoot today, so am in need of a small little cheap 4x4. Will only di a few miles on the road, only 4 miles to the shoot. Thinking along the lines of diahatsu fourtrack. Don't want anything too small though as it has to fit me, a black lab and a springer spaniel and a shotgun. Suzuki jimni looks a bit too small.

needs to be fairly capable in sticky mud, although tyres will be something quite aggressive to help with that. Want a low range box and not worried about anything else really

Sounds like a Fourtrak would be perfect - we bought one several years ago for that very reason - and for towing too. Watch out for rotten sills etc as it's about the only thing that lets them down. A whole step up in comfort to a LR Defender and will outlast anything with a green badge several times over if it's looked after. We happened to be talking to another member of our small syndicate this morning who is a mechanic and he's always on the lookout for fourtaks in good condition he reckons that each year the good ones are going up in value as they are getting rarer - in fact he said this morning that many now are fetching more money than a equivalent age / condition LR.

As for tyres ours came with a brand new set of Kumho road venture MTs which we didn't really need at the beginning - the plan was to get a second set of ATs and keep the MTs for winter - that never happened and we've been driving around for nearly 4 years with the MTs on and there is still plenty of tread left for pretty serious mud. Oddly there's very little road noise either - partly why we never bothered getting any other tyres and we've said several times that as soon as they need replacing we'll go and get the exact same thing.

Get an old Discovery. They're great trucks You'll probably find a 200-tdi in rough condition for that. If you get a 300-tdi then even better as the engine is better and the interior is nicer.

Even the latest versions of the Grand Vitara still have low box unlike most of it's "soft road" 4x4 competitors, I've just bought one!

I only started with a fourtrak as I know people that have had them, one guy had one from new and said he wouldn't sell it until it was dead. turned out he couldn't break it so ended up selling it last year after being made redundant and upgraded to a brand new sdv6 disco

I've had a one previous owner Disco that was around 6-7 years old and Vitara that was already 12+ years old and had numerous owners / abusers. Disco fell apart from day one and needed constant attention. Vitara just needed petrol ! make your own mind up which I think was the better vehicle

Yep that's exactly what I thought when I saw the budget. For £500 I think your really going to struggle unless you are looking for a serious amount of work to make it road worthy.

there are quite a few vitara's within budget, it doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something that will get me from the lane into the field and onto the shooting ground
