Finally all is done and working just looks a bit bodged for now.

Rewired everything but left out connections for the actual light so obviously no good then just decided to use the rose wired it all up again then fitted new light bracket over that and it worked and isn't blowing anything but cosmetically the while thing isn't flush with the ceiling, shall work out how to attach it better and fix it once I have.

take the old ceiling rose down strip and straighten the cables so all lengths are equal .a couple of inches of inner cores showing . join the wires using strip conectors the 15 amp ones are the best to use. screw backplate to the ceiling if it has one and connect fitting and screw it on

You missed the bit about pushing the block into the ceiling void as there's not enough room in the new fitting.

This is how it looks.


I was thinking of taking the rose and cutting a recess into it so bracket will fit flush against it and the ceiling if the wires will allow.

its an easy mistake to make, i dont mind helping people get stuff sorted rather than sitting on a soap box quoting regulations and spouting a load of guff i make mistakes in other fields and need digging out of the sh ,.,.t . the bloke who never made a mistake never made anything

The earth conductor was used on the lights in my house to carry one of the lives in a 2 way setup.

Luckily the guy I bought the house off was a fireman.

correct what i do is conect all the wires in to conector strips then use short flex switched live neutral and earth in to the fitting conectors as the existing cables wont be long enough

You've put all the blacks together and 1 of them is a live returning from switch, me mate did this a few years back when moving in and when he pulled the pull cord flash bang and out went the culdy sack. turns out his house wasn't earthed and and the previous owner used a nail for fuse wire.

yea ive conected on to cables where they have used the earth as a switched live before . a bit of head scratching why my fitting isnt working and a bit of testing realised whybodged switchwire

My favourite was an immersion heater with no earth continuity, came out of CU in 4mm² T&E up to landing, connector block into 2.5mm² twin (no earth) VIR? for run to back of house then changes back to 4mm² T&E for the drop to switch

My brother's house was formerly owned by a builder () so you can imagine the bodgery he's encountered over the years... kitchen extension electrics were the best bit. Oven spurred off the lounge socket ring main and the wiring to the worktop sockets running diagonally across the wall from where the ceiling met the original back wall of the house. When he stripped out the old upper cabinets he found where the plasterer had written "Do not drill here" and dashed lines indicating the cable run.

It's a bad idea to use a drill as a live cable detector!

Ive had to rectify a number of issues given the horrific electrics in our house, random single feed cables used where they must have run out of twin and earth.

The most common one is for light fittings, where they have just twisted all the common lives together and wrapped them in electrical tape rather then use a junction box or even connector block.

Random circuit paths - upstairs and downstairs sockets from random rooms on the same ring main.

Spurs all over the place....'shocking'.

Supposedly is down to the building company who only pay a set amount for the electrical installation, so the quicker the sparkies are in and out, the more money they clear on each house.

Well got round to fitting the ceiling fans, we shall not be moving from thus house for some time unlike previous houses were we moved every two years, and seeing how the missus got given them before we met I think it was about time they were up.

Wiring was much easier than upstairs which was a relief but fitting them while on my own stood at top of ladder was a bit nerving but I done it and she was happy.

Well almost happy she only 5ft so couldn't reach the toggles so for now I've fitted string till I get some longer ones.

Well got round to fitting the ceiling fans, we shall not be moving from thus house for some time unlike previous houses were we moved every two years, and seeing how the missus got given them before we met I think it was about time they were up.

you've met my uncle then...he still insists that this is all a suitable way to wire out a house. Its the main reason i stopped working for him. He wasn't happy when i had to fail 4 of his installations in a row and got a other guy in, who also failed them
