cold bending 5mm plate

i need to put some 90 degree bends in some bits of 5mm plates, 90mm long and bend will be 18mm from one edge leaving 60mm on the other. Basically making some 60x18 angle iron bits.

need to make 4 but don't have anything except a vice.

am i asking too much or can it be done without splitting at the bend?

Scribe a line with a thin cutting disc say 2-3mm deep where you want the bend pop into vice belt it over with BFH weld up the cut,grind off to finish

cheers. Will give it a try tomorrow. Its for my roof bar project, i was just going to buy some 60x60 and cut it down but the only stockist near me doesn't hold angle iron at all, and not much else either.

got my box section off eBay so while that is being delivered i will knock up these mounts

nothing big enough in box, just 40x40 that is reserved for another job that in hoping to also get finished tomorrow.

was going to cut and weld it but thought bending would be more accurate

Unless its on a pressbrake then cut and weld is the best bet!

i suppose i could use a bit if scrap box section to get the angle spot on. Cut and weld it is then, although i have just come home with a pcp air rifle than needs fixing, and as its a paying job i suppose i should do that first

5mm will take a 90 bend if you linish the edges smooth otherwise it can split a bit.

don't have any angle available and cant justify paying postage for such a small amount when i have plenty of 5mm steel plate going spare
