washing machine water pump ?

The mothers washing machine is no longer pumping the water out of the drum after it has finished washing, i have taken the pump out of the machine and the impeller clicks around in 30 degree segments when i turn it with my finger. Surely this should be spinning freely ?

When ours used to stop it was usually a hair clip in the impellor trap, accessed at the front lower corner by removing a circular plastic disc and yes when the impeller was moved it would move in little jumps and not rotate freely.

That motion is quite fine for that type of motor, don't worry about that. Does the motor run when the machine does it's emptying phase? If it does (you should be able to hear it at least) - then check for blockages from the impeller to the drain hose. I guess you've already removed the filter trap to get to the motor anyway, but it's amazing what you can find in there that'll stop the impeller going round. I once found a teaspoon in one (quite bent though).

I have cleaned it out several times and there has been nothing in it. I also just dismantled the little motor and the shaft appears to be very badly worn.

I presume the coupling between the motor and impeller is what allows the clicking motion of the impeller ? The sides of the motor shaft must have been hitting the inside of the motor casing, surely that isn't right ?

Had this problem too, the water that should of drained out had to be caught in a bucket when you opened the door.

When the service man came out he found it to be a blocked drain plug... Bottom right of machine, apparently the water passes through and catches the fluff but if like us you didn't know about it the fluff builds up and blocks it therefore not letting the water drain out.

A simple fix we waited days to find out, we just empty the plug regularly now and all has been fine.

Brought the pump to the breakers shop I go to, he reckoned it had water in the motor and was well and truly'ed, got a brand spanking new one for 25 euros so fingers crossed it works.

that's because it gradually got louder so you dont notice any difference. until it works properly again

Think its more to do with magnetism, they are a sychronus motor if I recall correctly.
