It is a bit steep isn't it - he doesn't need to buy one, only do something similar.

Having said that, I still think it would be best if he can find a way to store the bikes in the house… oh and he should check the locks on his front door. I've heard plenty of stories about people having their front door kicked in and bicycles stolen out of their hallway.

Side fact. If you store your bikes in a garage that is attached to the house the bikes are insured up to the full value by contents insurance with most insurance policies (up to the max value of a single item).

Put a PIR shed alarm in there, I got one and it makes a noise when the door is opened if you forget to switch it off.
