The Drill has Landed!

Did a deal with one of my friends for this last night - £250 it set me back.

It's a Clarke CDP501F, but has been modified from single to three phase and has a inverter attached to it for speed control & DC Brake. Also has a foot switch which is handy. Needs a worklight and some clamps for the bed though.

It's certainly miles better than my drill and hopefully it will serve you well, like the foot switch...very handy.

I think though when my time comes to spend money I will be tempted by an old British lump, probably just an 'age' thing but I like the old machinery I served my time with.

How's the footswitch configured? Motor runs as long as you press the pedal, or press-on, press-off?

At present push to run, release to stop, but I might see if I can change the programming, I know when I change it to local control (instead of remote) on the controller, that you press start and it just keeps going. However the reverse option doesn't seem to work, so may need fiddling with the programming when I can find the manual.

I looked at a lot of older drills, and just wasn't happy with how they looked, this one has the right "feel" for my workshop

just curious why does everyone want to reverse there pedestall drill . in 45 years ive never wanted to or even have the need and if the chuck is screwed on it might just screw off in reverse similar to a lathe chuck would

Just seemed like a handy function to have TBH, and was trying to figure out why it wasn't doing it! The chuck is a MT3 so shouldn't unscrew from the shaft...

Some tapping heads don't self reverse, they just have a clutch that stops it at the bottom of the hole. You then need to reverse it to bring the tap out. That's the only use I can think of really, and I'd rather get a self reversing tapping head if I needed it.

unless u intend to tap a lot of holes on production i wouldnt bother .even a second hand tapmatic costs big bucks

yea if u run the video tape back it does life would be nice if u could . no one would die and we all would be rich and no one make mistakes

I had to run my drill backwards to use some left's once. But I just crossed the drive belt twixt motor and spindle and put up with the rubbing for the duration of the job. Ive never felt the need to make a real reverse and I have 3 phase so could just fit a switch to swap the phases.

Depends on the size. You can occasionally pick up one of the old archer heads for reasonable money, but I went one better, I have an ancient dedicated tapoing machine that I bought for an embarassingly small amount of money. It's driven by an endless round belt a bit like the old fashioned dentists drills and looks bonkers but it will handle steel up to five mm and more in aluminium and is incredibly fast and easy to use. Press lever, let go, job done, and square!

Looks like <£100 for one on eBlag I reckon. May well splurge at some point. Bigger priorities atm tho!

You can easily enough tap just by winding the tap in by hand. Once it's chucked, you have the alignment. Looked at the tapping heads several times myself, but never as yet found a convincing reason to bid on one. You'd have to be doing a lot of tapping to make their purchase a viable thought, even if they go fairly cheap.

On a tangent, what the hell are left hand drill bits used for?

I use them for drilling out broken studs, As the stud normally comes out with the heat before you get close to the threads.

Same as Woody, but normally I run them in the cordless as I have more control over steering them intitially to get the hole spot on if the dot punch has wandered. But on that occasion it was easier to do it in the dp for some reason. It only takes a minute to cross the belt while you use it backwards. You could probably do something fancy with guides to stop the rubbing at the X point if you had to do it more than once, but I haven't.
