Another powersupply to my Garage thread.

It's difficult to tell without an overall pic of the CU, meter, etc. but it looks like there is no RCD protection on the house wiring, you have to ask yourself, how much is you and yours safety worth?

Just a really bad time...I have shelled out a lot on consumables for 5 projects I can make a few quid on, but 3 of them require the garage electrics to be substantial.

Is that CU not fitted with RCD's . I have only been in the House 34 years..................if only I had a local leccy I could trust not to fleece me.

Last time I paid anybody to do anything in my house . I purchased a Gas fire in the sales. Asked a Gas safe guy to fit it and he decided he could not fit it , even though it was only a small fire. Ended up asking if I wanted the old fire serviced before he put it back in. Then proceeded to charge me the £70 he wanted to fit the fire and another £90 for a service on the old fire and all he did was bloody hoover it with my hoover..................whats more galling is all my gas work used to be done by my Neighbour who used to work for British Gas. Now with all these certs and competencies he is not allowed to carry out work anymore.

RIP off Britain in action. lol

Whats the approx going rate to fit a DP distribution block, Supply Isolator, and RCD CU if I get all the parts.

if your replacing the old consumer unit u wont need the blocks as all the cables will go in to the new unit. if the wiring tests out ok its about a 6 hour job including having to bond the gas and water or oil boiler feed if there is oil with 10.0mm earth wire and a 16mm earthwire from electricity boards earth to consumer unit

IIRC the DNO will install a supply isolator if you ask them. Mention you're installing some new power showers and they may upgrade your supply to 80A or 100A incomer too...

DNO = Distibution Network Operator - Scottish and Southern, UK Power Networks etc.

there takin the p..ss a new 8 way 17 th edition units only 65 quid only 15 quid max for earhwire and theres only 5 circuits on your board and one for your shower and conect your garrage supply in .400 max and thats about it

I did say that at the time. I wish I could get £100 for a days work let alone £400 when they said £600 I realised that 17th edition and part P is just another money making scheme for the Authorities so they can cream of fees for certifying people.

They kept on with some crap about bonding and such like. seems strange its worked fine for 30 odd years without bonding and just because some bureaucrat says it needs different standards its gonna cost 400 quid.

earth bonding is part and parcell of any work done in houses now , any new work done eg a new socket or a light or fan ect must be through an rcd and gas and water must be bonded . its fair enough realy to update the system for safety . u can get away with using an rcd spur on the new circuit u wire but gas and water must still be bonded. im not just saying it because its my job

Which end of the SWA is the RCD fitted?

Looking at pic 4 I would suggest you look at upgrading the CU when funds allow.

I have come to the conclusion without a supply to the garage I cant get extra cash I need to pay for the CU upgrade. So....my intention is to get a service block connector and use that to supply the shower RCD and a new Garage kit that will be located in the Garage.

My main concern now is to get the correct garage kit. So I can recover the costs and then work on getting cash for consumer unit replacement.

Screw fix have a special on but when I went to look at prices I remembered another thread where members mentioned B and C ratings and curves etc etc.

So as I need to power a transwave converter with a 7.5hp motor on the lathe and also a socket for 32amp plug will a this work. http://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-3-way-fully-populated-rcd-garage-consumer-unit/29910.

My personal preference is for the Contactum stuff sold by TLC. Get a metal one tho, the plastic ones are a bit flimsy
