Not at all. When we were kids we didn't have any of these Playstation things.

We had to make our own amusement with what we could find. Weedkiller, sugar, bits of tubing, fireworks, just things we could find lying around or buy with the few pennies we had for pocket money.

the garden center used to take the sodium chlorate of the shelves 4 weeks before bonfire night they used to sell it to 15 year olds no bother

Best fuses we found were low ohm low wattage resistors, bell wire and a lantern battery, a bit more high tech!
Plus being country boys we had a good supply of Rook Scarers on hand, guaranteeded to blow the exhaust off a car or a gutter off a roof.
My all time favourite though was a certain purple crystal (PP) and Glycerine, mixed together and deposited on the dance floor at the village disco the room filled up with purple smoke, everyone packed the dance floor thinking that the DJ had invested in a smoke machine not realising until latter that the smoke also caused permanent purple staining to clothes, skin, teeth, hair etc.
You would have thought they were filming a Ribena ad!

Greetings Jan,
I did enjoy your tale in Post #20, however I think you would have to go further back than 1930 products for acetylene lamps on motorcycles. My first motorcycle was a rather streamlined 1934 Francis Barnett 250cc Cruiser that I used at night to take my then young lady to village dances twice a week.

I was reluctant to travel far enough to collect this Ebay offering in the lower link below so perhaps missed out on a bargain.

However I have been looking at one of the Injector torches available from Amazon UK that looks to be capable of the type sections I want to use for an ebike side-car to carry my Travelscoot class 2 invalid carriage.
This is the smallest of a range of 4 torches and can use nozzles of 0.5 to 0.9mm in diameter with an acetylene consumption up to 125 l/h at a pressure of 0.001 Mpa for welding mild steel up to 2mm. As I would be bronze welding thin steel tubes to 1/8" plates I believe it should manage.

As always all comments would be welcome.

If anyone is interested, you could, in theory, make oxygen and acetylene using water; Run a current through it to separate hydrogen and oxygen and then collect the hydrogen in a container and spark an arc between 2 (consumable) carbon electrodes and that should make acetylene. I don't think you could get the volume to run a torch for any decent length of time but its a cool concept.
