machining stainless

which is better for machining. 304 or 316?

have been asked to make a small run of parts from either of the above. No welding or heat involved, just turning

Do yo mean better or easier? 316 is easy to get a nice finish but an **** to stop work hardening. 304 machines easier but can be a bit teary finish wise. 303 is the easiest.

I've just made some brake caliper pistons for the front of the Africa Twin out off 316, the finish was that good I didn't even need to polish them.

316 it is then. Not a great deal of machining to do, stock is already to size for od, not critical either as long as it roughly 8mm, then two small grooves .2deep x.5 wide then a 120 degree (inclusive) taper to a point. Got 12 to do. Haven't got a clue what they are for, he is into model helicopters and planes so could be for them, or just a complete random job for someone else, most of the stuff he asks me to is delrin or nylon

I've always found 316 to machine fine. theres not much difference between them though.

Probably because the guy never heard of 303. I would have suggested it.

cheers langy. Have gone with 316 anyhow but i don't think there is enough for all 12 parts so will probably end up doing the last few in 304.
finish is the critical part, he wants it as good as possible

or he already has the above mentioned stock and doesn't want to buy more when he doesn't have to
