What methods ate used to join flat belts without using the metal lacing that is usually used?
...and it wont give the tapping noise then either

i pointlessly tried to re-join one belt to get it running with green garden string, it lasted about 3 minutes, and broke pretty much as soon as the tool touched the bit of steel i wanted to test with lol.
i was thinking stitching, one of the belts that was snapped before i picked the lathe up had been stitched.

or swipe the gf tights and wrap round and tie a knot in emA bunch of postmans laggy bands might work, as a get by

Shoe repairer or saddler can probably stitch it with heir heavy duty machine.
Yes that's probably the right name but I couldn't think of it at the time.That's what I was going to suggest, I've always known it as a scarf joint though.
