Try meetens of gosport. I paid 15 sheets for a piston and rings. Ask to speak to Paul he's a really nice bloke. Make sure you don't have a plus 10 or 20 thou piston in it first. And be really careful with the little pegs on the piston as they get eroded by hot gas when the rings wear and blow by.

To rev, it must be getting air and fuel so the only way it can get that, if the seals are ok, it would seem it must be coming in through the carb. so the slide must be held up. One way to test for air leaks is to get an old inner tube cut, it with the valve in the middle, put either end on the exhaust and inlet with clips and blow it up hah!! I mean inflate it.Then check with soapy water.

I received a reply from Paul, and your 15 sheets is now 49 3/4 sheets. A bit much for me I'm afraid.

'm not sure if Normspanners is answering my question, but I did a pressure test, and it is fairly well sealed.

Sorry (Mental note to myself to look at the date before sprouting) was in a rush to get to hospital (my excuse)
my thoughts is with a two stroke if you tend to lift the machine when pull starting, there is generally enough compression to start, if you are getting fuel and spark, try the flywheel hasnt sheared its key if it has one. Sometimes with engine like a rotorvator if stalled quickly by the cutters the flywheel tends to carry on and tear the woodruff you get everthing you need to start just not at the right time. The flywheel nut will appear to be tight, you will only know when it is pulled off.

Hi Normspanners,

I did a compression test, and it was 100PSI. I have had the flywheel off previously, cleaned and set the points. Set the timing the best I can, I'm pretty sure it 20ish degrees advanced. Changed the Condenser, not an exact one.

Broke one piston ring, and scored the piston a bit.

a compression test doesnt always tell you a lot on a two stroke coz of the porting, they sort of turbo charge them selves. the faster you turn them over the more is transfered from under the piston to on top

with any sort of score on the barrel that is where you loose the compression usually out of the exhaust port.

You still need both rings. I too broke a ring and it wouldn't run right if at all. It can t create the vacuum to draw the fuel up with one ring I was told

That was a question, you broke it, or it was broken when stripped and then replaced?

When I re-assembled the barrel, I forgot the register pin and broke the ring also scored the piston. (And I have in my pocket a little end from a Villiers engine that I replaced around 1962)

Having got a near £50 quote for a piston and rings, I'll see if I can find a ring that will fit.

Yes, a bit obscure!

In 1962, I replaced a Villiers little end and must have left the old one on the path. (I think it might have been my MKC Bond minicar. My mum must have picked it up and put it in her sewing box, which I cleared out when she died. I've kept it in my pocket ever since. I was pointing out that the years since then have allowed me to forget the ring location pins, and much much more sadly.
