welding jackets - whats the craic?

As above really. I'm looking to buy a leather welding jacket for when I'm underneath a car using the MIG. Getting fed up of spatter burning through conventional gear. Anything to watch for?

I've had 'proper' welding coats and aprons but found them heavy and dont fit properly
but for under a car I find a s/hand leather bomber jacket from a charity shop was ideal doesnt matter if it gets burnt has elasticated cuffs to stop the dreaded molten blobs going inside the sleeves, with proper welding jackets I use elastic bands round the wrists to stop it.

I agree with second hand leather jackets but I can't understand why you don't wear welding gloves they stop anything going down your sleeve and generally are less than a fiver.

Get some ear plugs if your welding under a car because weld in your ear won't half put a crimp in your day.

I do wear welding gauntlets but I have arms like a guerilla that are longer than my legs so with the standard leather coat there is a large gap between the two and therefore a perfect opening for hot blobs that I have ended up with rolling burn marks all the way down my arms, chest and normally stop at my gut by my belt that then burn through my pants and end up in my underpants !! so to save that a pair of elaccy bands works a treat.
Coz I allways want to finish the run before sorting the burn then start doing a funny dance called the HOT KNACKER SHUFFLE.

leather is king.
as for overhead,if you tuck your sleeves into your gloves,hot stuff rolls into your gloves.
tuck you gloves into your sleeves,and stuff gets down your arm/sleeve.
something like elastic bands as said always help

haha isnt that the truth normspanners bloody hotblobs always find a way no matter what had em on me **** in me ears and had em go down to the parts that hotblobs just should not be going anywhere near

for those of us with extra long arms

So is a second hand old leather jacket better than suede welders jackets like the ones on ebay, in terms of hot weld blob proofing,( not the fit)?

A welders coat is thicker but the suede type or more actually it is just like rough leather get covered in dirt and oil etc too easily IMO and most second hand coat tends to be Tanned which rejects dirt and blobs grinding dust etc but the OP was asking for welding under a car which again IMO comfort is king for getting into awkward places and seem to cope with the odd hot blob , dust and dirt.

Andy, went today had a look in a couple of charity shops got a xl black leather bomber thickish leather type jacket press studs on the loong sleeves, zip front £6.50 really comfy itll do as a welding spare.
