Daft thought,car battery starter

As the title says daft thought but here goes,could a old small buzzbox with some electrickery gizmos added/fiddled about with be used as one of those car booster starters?

Gonna run now before you lot throw things at me and tell me to go forth

Course it could.
You'd need an extra earth lead for the +ve connection, and use the regular earth for -ve.

Then you'd need a new transformer for 12V (14v really). Then a BIG regulator (160A +).
Then use the case to keep all the bits in - you'd have to remove the old transformer.

So, actually - no. No you couldn't.

considering a rectifier ( ) is about £40 off the bay, not really worth the effort.

the problem with using a 110 tranny is that would cut the voltage by half so say its ocv was 28v that would be 14v ideal voltage for charging until you recify it then the voltage goes up multiplied by 1.4 having said all that, I have started a fork lift when desperate with a mig and two sets of jumper leads in series joined together to drop the voltage the fork lift had to be started asap to off load a truck. the owner was not bothered if it fried the alternator, as that was cheaper than the charges for the truck waiting. got the driver to crank it as I worked the welding switch and sure enough it fired up with no damage.

If you're looking for a big old charger/starter, I have a Sealey thing in the garage that you could have for a few beer tokens. I'm not sure if it works or not though. I seem to remember there was some output voltage, but I've never tried it out properly.

would it not be easier to get a decent battery on the car? i have anderson connectors on all my vehicles so if one does go flat (missus leaving lights on) is an easy job to jump start

Well I once used my Oxford type oil filled welder via an Oxford DC rectifier box (intended for tigging from an ac transformer welder) to fast charge my electric workshop trolley (basically a small milk float) - the battery set was 24 volts (and HUGE) so the output of the rectifier was roughly right !

depends on what your trying to start with it.

old tractors ect you can just bash an arc weled straight on the starter if (it's series wound inertia type ) just done use the selonoid or the dynamo / alternator goes bang.

can also put some big dioeds out of a mig on the output. but you will upset the battery and any electronics wount find it amuseing

those clarks are good, i have had them in the past .. well worth the cost. but check the engine size with the details for the starter pack as some are only good for smaller engines.

Next door has a great starter/charger that i often call upon. I don't have room for one in my shed so I'll have to do without but it's a handy bit of kit.

Oh,so it is possible then,not something i'd want to dabble with myself being as i know sod all about it all.
Might get one of those boosters though being as her indoors likes to plug in the phone,switch car lights,radio blasting,all before she turns the key
Then muggings here has to move the van half on the path half on the road to jump it

Why not have a spare battery on a cheap sack truck with a pair of HD jump leads ? Keep spare battery on trickle charge ready to use.
