I just fell across some info on a french forum, for what its worth:
Bloke asked about a certain make, usual response that they are generic chinese badged up into several names -which we know already.
Another chap responded who said he is a technician for the outfit that sells the welders he reckons:
the electronic components are sourced from Japan
the boards are soldered up in China
the carcass, switches and all other components are chinese
the machines are assembled in Germany.
I would have thought that the machines are checked over in Germany rather than assembled there?
He reckons 90% of problems are sorted out over the phone, he has seen one machine that was duff and returned to assembler or manufacturer,
other machine probs were relativley easily sorted and the machines returned to the purchaser-but he would say that would he not.
This is the machine that was being discussed:
http://www.igbtig.com/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=4255461.
Now, as it happens I'm thinking of a plasma cutter and also a tig machine.
If I go with DC only I will try to buy a british or French made machine, if AC/DC it will have to be of Chinese origin due to cost.
Plasma will have to be chinese.
Most likely source for me will be a german company who like most sell chinese machines after they have checked them out/spec'd up some bits.
Checking on plasma 50s available in France showed up this:
http://www.igbtig.com/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=7107850 (HT btw means ex VAT) zoom in on the torch. All the ones I have looked at in france have the same torch which I believe can be a bit fragile (the trigger bit).
Now see the other version at the german firm:
http://www.stahlwerk-schweissgeraete.de/en/plasmaschneider-cut-50/33-plasma-cutter-cut-50.html.
Click on the torch picture-looks like a more robust piece of kit, they also include a water filter and gauge-yes- this mounts on the back, however, my view is that if the gauge goes west or the glass gets broken you just swap it, if the french machine has gauge problem or you break the glass??? and it is not ready to roll if you don't have a water filter already?
BTW I used the term welding plant because that is what we called them when I began my apprenticeship-a welder is a person who operates welding equipment -thus a chinese welder is a chinese person who welds.
