I think the fact they're 'too ornate' is the point. Nowadays, things are designed to be as simple as possible with no embellishments. Perhaps his statement is that we're forgetting to put beauty back into our products. Look at St Pancras Station compared to anything from the 1970s - different time, different attitude.

I quite like it but he's going to be stuffed when his water jet or CAD program breaks...
