Example of zero weld penetration

As above; lifting eye factory welded to the dipper arm from a 13T excavator.
Operator was using it to pull a drag box...virtually torn the plate off -you can still see the original profiled edge of the mounting plate - untouched by weld. As the weld was ground off the machine, the remains of it started to 'blue' and curl up.

Luckily he wasnt lifting with it. Loler test up to date, and not a particularly heavy load it was pulling

It won't come off again

A tad concerning that a machine that carries out such heavy loads can have been engineered to such a low quality. It's lucky no one got hurt.

I had the same thing happen on a bottle cage. One of the four lifting loops pulled off, and the only evidence that it had ever been there was the missing paint.

I certainly hope that's fed back to the manufacturers with photos - there's a process there that urgently needs changing.

- how on earth did it last long enough to scrape all that paint off - it looks like that hook has had plenty of use before that happened? and there was me worrying if I had achieved enough penetration on my 150kg log splitter mount for the mini-ex . I bet the owner is not a happy chappy, I know I wouldn't be.

I recently had to re-weld a load of dodgy joints that had split on the lifting mechanism on one of those big skips trucks with the hydraulic hook that hauls the great big rectangular construction site skips onto it's chassis. Some of the weld hadn't penetrated, similar to this thread and some were too high powered and the weld had just rolled along and had no integrity and had split in the middle as it was simply just a thin slither rolled around the bearing collars. These things haul about 20 odd tonne up onto their chassis. You wouldn't want one of those falling on top of you.

I reported it back to our workshop, and they had it re-welded and load tested. We had inherited the cages in a company buy-out so had no idea where they were made.

TBH I've thinking the same thing - couldn't quite picture what had happened and what it should be like but didn't want to look dull asking if it was perfectly clear to everyone else.

From the photo it looks like the arm has bent and the hook has peeled off.
