Almost certainly the original weld was a resistance weld, I don't know if gun components are made from mild steel but I would TIG it, If you go down the brazing route find someone with an oxy acetylene set up to do it, either way its a two minute job.
if u can file it it is soft. if it just runs over the top and doesnt cut its hard .oxy acet and braze would be the quickest and easyest and a quck rub upA file marks it
I don't know what type of steel is used, in common with a lot of American firearm parts I've come across it is fairly roughly finished but hard as hell.
