hinging idea help

Hi I have seen a picture on the internet of an access chamber I am trying to re create. as seen in the picture it is a hinged concrete cover but I am confused on how the hinging works. when this cover is closed, there is only a 3mm gap all round between the frame and cover edge. as this strut needs a sort of hinge turning point, does anybody have any ideas how this is achieved and where the point is.

I would imagine that there is a lip on the lower edge of that cover in the picture that locates on a similar upturned lip on the edge surround and that acts as the hinge point.

You can just see the bracket that the strut is probably attached to.

What about having the pivot point, say, 3-4" from one edge. That way when lifted that edge will drop down into the hole. Shouldn't be difficult to make a sealing flange if required. Having pivot point there would also make it a little easier to lift.

I've made these before. There are two plates with radiused slots in them, welded to the back edge of the frame. Two plates welded to the bottom of the lid with 16mm round stainless pins through. As the arm raises it, the pins slide round once the top edge of the cover hits the frame. Once shut, the weight of traffic etc is supported by that bottom lip all the way round.

Those spring arms take some finding to cope with the weight of the lid. I might have the drawings for the profiled plates i bought that might help you, but no drawings or photographs of that type of lid in particular.

Note the lid 'pan' is tapered as well. It jams if it is square.
