I was told that for my limited use/need for Microsoft office, a free open office download would suffice. If I try downloading apache open office, Norton tells me its not safe. Anyone.

Get rid of Norton and download a Microsoft Security Essentials. It is free and works fine not like that panicky Norton bloatware. That reminds me I need to update my Open Office
+1 On MS Security essentials. Just fixed PC with virus as it came with Win8 and Symantec/Norton. Had all security disabled by default; waiting for you to pay them to set up an account. I have been telling people to not use it for years as it causes much more problems than it is worth.
I used Open Office until the Oracle mess started. Now I use LibreOffice. Works well.
I have used and loved OO for years, still on my XP machine.
Littl'uns' Vista was slowing and after dumping the rubbish, I discovered Defender was not initialising. MS no help what so ever. So to speed things up for her I dual-booted Ubuntu 12.0.4LTS which now comes with LibreOffice. More than good enough for her course useage, and it is considerably quicker anyway.
NOD32 for me on XP, but had problems with everything I tried on Vista. No need for anything on Linux.

Blame Oracle for this mess of forking and having to rename things from when they bought Sun as they wouldnt let the copyrighted name go to the foundation, theyre making a **** of java in pretty much the same fashion.
