The basic technique is to weld them roughly to shape, heat to welding heat in a forge, add lots of borax, and hit into shape with a hammer.
Google "chain damascus" and "forge welding" or "cable damascus" for an idea of the techniques.
It's not easy - you can get what looks like a perfect knife, spend hours honing, and polishing, and adding a handle, and polishing, and making a sheath - then find out you left an occlusion of carbon in the middle, and it snaps first time you use it.

If there's anyone near you who makes horse tack, they'll likely be able to make one for you. Probably wouldn't be cheap though.

This thread has got me thinking about making a knife too, when i was a yound apprentice i used to make crude ones from old mechanical hacksaw blades, the building was old and had a pitched wood roof, there were about 25 stuck in the ceiling above my little colchester lathe by the time we moved, happy days..

Yeah that's about right. In Chatham Dockyard, The asbestos roof above the apprentice vices in No2 Shop was always peppered with holes. Hours of fun gripping a ball bearing in the very top edge of the vice jaws, then smacking the end of the spindle with a big hammer. Exit high velocity ball bearing! I'm not sure why we always assumed that they'd only go up and not off in some random direction through someone's ear hole but as you say, indestructible teenagers!

well, I have put a thread up about the first part of my knife, but after cutting the steel down I decided to harden the offcut to see how hard it would be.
put a bit of a point on one edge, hardened it with the induction heater coil and dropped it in some oil. the only thing I could get to scratch it was a diamond tipped scriber that was in the toolroom.
think it will be plenty hard enough for what I want it to do.

I've made a few, get some veg tanned leather 3mm thick and make one it's not too difficult. This was my first one. Make a card pattern then cut the leather and wet form it round the knife. Drill the holes with a pillar drill for the stitching and get some strong thread. Follow tutorials on youtube or blade forums there are lots about and it's so much better than just buying something making it yourself.

Here's a damascus blade I put a Partridge wood handle on for a friend, he picked it up at a gun show for about £20 as a bare blade. It's not brilliant quality but it looks pretty and matches his gun barrel pattern.

Nice work. Is that leather hard now, and how do you stop it from losing its form?

I cut the shape from my template then just dip it in warm water, fold it round the knife and clip it in place then work it to shape with a piece of dowel pressing and rolling it. There is an extra piece down the stitched side to stop the blade cutting the stitching (called the welt I think) Once it has dried it holds the knife really firmly and the leather is set hard and will never lose it's shape while still keeping a bit of flexibility. Here's another later one showing the welt and the belt loop.

if used on other hard surfaces then yes it may, but I will only ever use this particular knife for skinning, gutting and butchering rabbits squirrels and wood pigeons.
I am thinking about another for everyday use though, possibly an EDC, folding 2 inch blade, steel handle and on a keyring. maybe only 1.5 inch blade as it would only be for those odd times when you find a cable tie that needs cutting or opening parcels

those are nice bits of leather, the first is fairly similar to mine, and I think we probably watched the same YT vid before making them as I used exactly the same method as you lol
