types of powder coating Guns

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a powder coating kit. Apparently there are two types , Corona ( HT charged and tribo ( static charging) . Has anyone had experience of these and what would you recommend.
Also if the metal is not perfect, will it coat over small imperfections, eg rust treated metal, I understand the tribo system can coat even wood !

If it's home use, I haven't seen a cheap tribo gun set up for sale.
I gather tribo is good on bike frames and other things with lot's of inside corners, not as many Faraday area problems. I saw something about a home made tribo gun, blokey who made it reckoned it was so good he wasn't giving any info away, he plans on flogging plans on ebay. But I manage multiple coats of primer and top coat with an electrostatic magic gun. These forks were so pitted I was considering re-tubing them. I primed and sanded the primer, with 80 grit between coats of primer and with 120 grit before top coat, then top coat and there are no visible pits on these.

I questioned them about this, and they said it was all the manufacturer offered so that was all they gave. I did point out that was besides the piont as any warranty is with the retailer, they weren't interested and I've better things to do with my time than spend money with people like that, and I'll buy it direct from the states and have it "brought in" So I'm willing to take the risk

I have the Electrostatic Magic kit and whilst it works OK, the results have always been far short of those I've aid for professionally - that said, I've never tried to get a high build of powder to see whether it gives better results. Cleaning up the mess after 'spraying' powder has always outweighed the time spent in painting an item instead.

Really! I hadn't given it much thought.

Is it because the powder is electrically charged? What sort of area is effected

Everywhere! Our booth at work is a mess, that's a proper powdercoating extracted wetback one too. You end up covered in the stuff if the flow's up, it's very partial to stick to eyelashes..

That's a lot of money for nothing at all, orange peel has nothing to do with the gun. It all about the flow properties of the powder when it cures and coating thickness, with a little of the object shape thrown in for good measure.

The other things that really bugs me about that is why would you want to put sand into something your gonna put a paint into! Madness! There is a good reason a proper powder gun is 3.5k new!

How long do you let the powder flow out for?
If you have a window on the oven you can see the powder flowing, I have had parts at 130º for thirty minutes and the powder is still flowing. I find things made from tube come out quite good, flat things not so good.


Never had any problem cleaning up? I have a fan behind where I squirt the powder, it takes the powder out the window, I put the fan on and give the area a blow with the blowy thing and it's pretty clean[as clean as anything in my raj can be]. The fan is just four 240V computer fans.
I use the PC02 electrostaticmagic gun.
I might have to try making a tribo gun.
