I have cut loads of threads on my Colchester Student MK 1.5 lathe before but always Imperial threads. I now need to cut a Metric 20x2 Buttress thread, the lathe has a lever to select Metric thread pitches.
It says in the manual not to use the Pickup Indicator when cutting Metric threads but to disengage the clutch, withdraw the tool and reverse the electric motor leaving the half nuts engaged.
My question is do I stop the motor before changing the motor direction lever on the clutch handle or can I just flick the lever across with the motor running?
It's the original 3 phase motor running off an ancient static inverter.
As the thread is only about 25mm long and the pitch is 2mm could I disconnect the clutch, leave the half nuts engaged, withdraw the tool, and wind the chuck back by hand, perhaps with a handle similar to the one Brightspark made for his lathe?
