Corrosion protection and coating

I have been restoring a mk3 escort shell for the last 18 months, and am getting to the stage where it needs some decent paint and protection underneath. Whenever I have replaced any box sections, I have always scrubbed the insides down to bare steel, zinc primered and gloss painted (rattle can) All rot has been cut out and replaced with steel, there is surface rust in a few places which brushes of quite easily. What is the best primer to use on a home set up. I do have a diy compressor, and a garage but do not have access to low bake facilities,spray booth etc. Am I better off doing this myself or leave it to the body shop? The car is on a spit jig so access is as good as it gets. I am after a robust coating rather than a pretty one, but both would be a bonus. Thanks

I would use some jotun epoxy 87, its as hard as nails and is ideal for underneath.

I was recommended and used Jotun Jotamastic 80 on the underneath. Other guys on here use the Lechler epoxy and they highly recommend it, either will be a good choice I would think. I then over coated with Gravitex anti-stonechip paint and topcoated with Bodycoloured Jotun Hardtop AS.

Rustbuster sell epoxy paints but they are rebadged Jotun paints.

Epoxy mastic 121 is Jotamastic smartpack and 421 epoxy primer is Jotun Penguard HB. The Jotun paints are about 50% cheaper.

Does anyone know where to buy these products in the Midlands? Just managed to buy a really good condition tailgate which has saved on some welding. Just the front wings to put on which I will probably do after I have epoxy primed and a bit of snagging to make sure everything is welded how it should be.

Welcome to the forum, Paully. I didn't formally introduce myself when I joined either. It's not a requirement. I can't help with the paint supplies, but stick around as nearly everyone on here is friendly and helpful.

I haven't used them myself but 121 is very popular on several forums that I have looked at, and I will be using Gravitex on my wheel arches eventually as I have never read a bad review.

Then we can say " oh that's that guy who introduced himself, so I better answer his question".................well who else was he going to introduce?

You can then go to a football match and introduce yourself to all around you as they try to watch the game Then do it in Petrol Stations, and at Bus Stops and Chip Shops throughout the Land.

I brushed it on underneath due to the noise of my compressor disturbing my next door neighbor being as she was ill and their bedroom being so close to my garage. How ever, I have just sprayed the inside of the car and the engine bay and it went on pretty well.

Yes I did, 10% thinners using scales to weigh it being as you have to mix the paint and hardener by weight also. It looks reasonably good too to say I did it with a work zone compressor and spray gun from Aldi, I set the pressure to 4 bar got the spray quantity adjusted, the spray gun is just a cheap gravity gun. I'll leave it a couple of days to harden before getting some colour on it. Not sure wether to use a Jotun product for colour or get some paint from an auto factor which would probably mean using some etch primer over the top of the epoxy. The outside of the car will almost certainly be painted by a pro.

You could have just mixed it 7:1 by volume (4:1 if using winter grade hardener) then added thinners of 10% of that mixed volume, or just to suit getting a nice laydown.

Don't leave it more than a few days as it will fully cure and need to be keyed before applying a topcoat. Using automotive paint is probably the best route and you can put it direct onto the epoxy. Putting etch primer over epoxy would be a waste of time and money and may even create problems.

Before I was a convert to Jotun on the underside and normal epoxy primer on the bodywork I used to use POR15 on the underside. With that I used to apply a light coat of Upol acid 8 etch primer on top so that subsequent coats of paint would stick. Gave up using POR15 as it is overpriced and very fussy about the amount of tooth on the surface it painted onto.

Jotun or 121 scuff fine if you want to paint over them.
