A little welding job on sheet steel

Is there anyone near me around the Warrington Cheshire area that's good with the TIG or MIG and would like a little work?

I've got a steel engine sump (1 mm steel) that needs welding. The sump is a special aftermarket deep sump that is too deep for the application I have and so I've cut an inch out of it (removing the factory weld in the process) and now it just needs re-welding back up. I've taken time to get the cut edges flat with a surface plate so the edges butt together very accurately. Here's a couple of piccies so you can see what the job entails. I need a nice weld without any pinholes etc. Anyone interested?

I'm in ellesmere port and have a MIG capable of 1mm - I have done car body repairs with it. I'm not a professional welder though, and nor am I welding day in day out.
I could certainly do it, but imagine I wouldn't be your first choice.

Thanks for the offer Andy, I'm a bit like you with the MIG welder, I've done stuff over the years but I'm not confident enough on thin stuff. I really need an expert on it as I don't want to blow any holes in it or have leaks. The part came from the States and so would be a pricey expercise to bsugger it up

I think that at 1mm it's probably a job better suited to TIG?

Or gas. It's not as if you'll ruin it beyond repair if a hole emerges, just have to fill it and grind back. IMHO its certainly possible with MIG. It doesn't get much more challenging than car body work as thin stuff goes. But that doesn't have to be leak proof.

Stop dithering about and get on with migging it all you need is 0.6mm wire, tack it every inch and then weld in between every 3rd or 4th just to keep the heat down. I'd also weld the inside aswell after finishing the outside just to make sure it doesn't leak.

If you start & stop your welds on the inside in the middle of the outside runs you shouldn't have any leaks.

Don't forget there is NO pressure in the sump only hot oil so surely you would have to have a hole you could see for it to leak

Why not practice on the bit you've cut out to gain some confidence ?

I don't see a problem with mig as long as you are ok at welding, I've repaired petrol tanks with mig with no leaks and all new metal makes things much easier

You could always lead fill / braze etc afterwards to seal up pinholes... if you get them.
