The “two second gap” is almost exactly one yard for every mph, which implies that if traffic is moving at 60mph there should be at least a 120 yard gap (60 yards in front and 60 yards behind) before an overtaking vehicle pulls in.
Under the new rules introduced last month, if “Mr really important” cuts in sharply in front of your vehicle, YOU are liable to be penalised for tailgating. Presumably you can also be penalised for if you use (“hog”) the middle lane in order to allow traffic to join from a slip road. It will be up to you to prove your innocence, so perhaps one of those forward facing cameras would be a good investment.
Some effects of the new legislation are rather predictable:
1 more frequent lane changing
2 more vehicles braking and accelerating in the inside lane
3 loss of respect for the police, if safe and courteous drivers believe they have been wrongly penalised
4 increased revenue for defence lawyers
5 increased sales of cameras
Impatient petrol-heads might be delighted, but it is hard to see how any of this is going to improve road safety. I wonder whether they consulted RoSPA.
We can only hope that most police officers have more sense than the folk who dreamed up the new regulations.

What new legislation. There are 3 lanes on a motorway. The middle and outside are for overtaking. Clearly its not possible for everybody to drive in thefirst lane, these days with the amount of taffic.
But if the lane to you left is clear you use that lane.

The new rules relate to 'on the spot ' fines - they haven't changed what is required as a driver. And in order to get stopped, the police have to observe you doing it (can't do it with cameras). So the chances of you being caught are pretty small if you genuinely do tailgate, the chances of being stopped due to a small period of time in breach due to others we be tiny...
Them cameras are quite pricey though, specially when paying out to prove someone else is a pest.
