1950 GMC 150 Pickup

Thought I'd start a thread on my new toy:A 1950 GMC 150 3/4ton Pickup.

So far I've rebuilt the magneto, as the bronze bush at the armature end, had worn out. I've replaced it, with an oilite bush, but in time I'll replace with a needle bearing or such.

Next on the list was the fuel gauge, as it only registers just over half, when full, I hoped it was just a case of bending the float: no the rheostat is AWOL.

While I had the seats out if gave it a vac, and found a small snake skin, and a few cocoons made from a reddish soil. Attached to the underneath of the seat base

I guess the snake was in for it's dinner and decided to shed it's skin.

Anyone know what they are

Could be wasp nests, we get wasps in Oz that make a similar nest to that.

it does look very tidy Dave, very nice remote purchase What's it like underneath? How are you going to keep the tin worm at bay without ruining the patina?

Yes Pete behind the seats, and that's where it will stay.

Thanks Andy, I'm well pleased. The underneath is frankly amazing, there is no bubble/flaky rust or rot anywhere.

Nice truck. I have a 57 Chevy in just now and there are some of those "nests" falling out of gaps in the frame rails.
Hopefully they were all empty.

How are you going to keep the tin worm at bay without ruining the patina?

So far I've given it a coat of Briwax, that makes the water run off, however I did read some where it says not to get wet.

As for the underneath, I'm unsure at the moment, I've a 2 gallon of Dinitrol, but it's black, so I might buy some clear Waxyol??

You're leaving it like that in the UK? It'll dissolve surely? I mean they can get away with it over in the dry states because even though wind-blown sand strips the paint off there's not enough moisture in the air to rust the metal but over here, I'd be worried about getting a full enough coverage with anything to keep the worms at bay. Looks bloody cool though.

We'll see. Any sort of clear coat, over the top would be timebomb. Once it starts to lift, as it will sooner rather than later,the water will get trapped and then it will rust, and how do you get the damn stuff off, without touching the patina.

Besides, it's built like a tank, the sheet metal must be 1.2-1.5mm thick

dinitrol do a clear high temp engine wax that should wash off with a mild solvent like panel wipe or similar,it stops bits rusting under the bonnet that much im sure of

meguires polish wax all over is normally used, cant get in all the nooks and crannys though
