Managed to bag myself a nice universal milling machine, with extra tilting table, collets and horizontal spindles on eblag, similar to a Deckel, problems are that it is in Warwick and I am in Somerset.
The seller reckons it weighs about a ton, I reckon nearer 750kg, and has a foot print of 1.3m by 1.3m and 1.6m high so smaller than a Bridgeport.
I had hoped to use a pallet courier to move it but the seller is not happy with trying to shift it from the pallet truck it is currently on onto a pallet. He also says he would not be happy that it would be stable on a pallet.
That leaves me two options:
A specialist machinery mover, with either HIAB or forklift, door to door distance of 140 miles - Any recommendations? This would be my preferred option if the price is right.
My other option is they are shifting some machinery round in a week and will have a forklift on site so I could borrow or hire a plant trailer and drive up for them to load. The fag is a 5 to 6 hr round trip and organising the forklift at my end to get it off the trailer onto my pallet trucks.

Generally sticking some piece of machine on a pallet and throwing a bit of strap banding onto it isnt enough. The better way is to bolt the machine via the mounting holes in its base to spreader plates which sit inside the pallet and then strap it solidly the pallet. That way the entire pallet has to collapse, and if you use a heavy duty euro pallet, someone has to do something very stupid indeed to have this happen.
The problem you have is this is all extra work for the seller, but Ive found people ameniable to go the extra mile if I offer to pay for some of their time to do it right.
Once its on a solid pallet in a stable manner, you can move it with the usual pallet handling equipment.

My bridgeport interact turned up a few months back bolted a pallet the same way. The seller loaded it with a fork lift, and we unloaded it this end with the trucks hiab, and We'll move it round to final destination when we're ready with either the jcb with slings from above(not so great, bit bouncy for my liking) or the neighbors telehander. I'll take it off the pallet only once its at the entrance to the workshop proper then we'll skid it on oiled sheets as not enough head room in there to use the pallet truck.

Anyone ever used the landylift chap? I seem to recall seeing mention of him a few times, but can't remember whether it was good, bad or non-plussed.

I have used both Landylift and Wheelers.

I would heartily recommend both of them - they are completely opposite ends of the spectrum of moving stuff, but Steve (I think it is) at Landylift really was conscientious about moving my stuff and very friendly. I would use him again in a heartbeat. I think this lift would be out of his usual range, maybe - best to ask him. Huddersfield based, but I know he gets about so you never know.

Wheelers were also good, but much more on the industrial side. See my thread about buying a powerhammer if you want to see them. You could probably, maybe, get it picked up 'on the way past'. They were pretty accommodating with me, and stored my hammer until they were coming past with a hiab lorry to save me some pennies. They were easy to deal with - no bad attitude on the phone or needless rudeness that I got with a lot of the others I tried. For a big lift, I'd use these guys all the time.

In your situation though, I'd just rent a trailer for £50 quid and spend a half day going to get it. Get good ratchet straps and find out how to strap stuff down so it doesn't come loose.

Why not try blackmores machinery haulage based in Yeovil?

I have used them many times to move big machines and they have always bent over backwards to help me out.

Your mill might be a little small for them but Speak to Wayne he might be able to help

Thanks for the recommendations, in the end I opted for a flatbed trailer hire, £25 for 24 hrs and timed it so that the seller had a forklift on site.
