repairing a shotgun barrel

Gun barrels are generally made from en19, to the best of my knowledge en19 doesn't weld well. But i have never tried it. I have seen a barrel of a .270 rifle that split at the muzzle, the owner was a builder and put the rifle into the back of his jeep with bags of cement , the muzzle got blocked and when he fired it the muzzle split. The repair was simply removing the first few inches and recrowning the muzzle. Anything chamber end i would be very wary of.

The BASC stand at gamefairs usually has a table full of horrors like that. There's usually a couple of shotguns properly peeled apart like banana skins where folk have pushed the barrels into the ground climbing over fences. Dropping a twenty bore cartridge into a 12 bore not realising and putting a 12 bore cartridge in behind it is apparently quite common as well.

it is not illegal to work on or modify firearms, I have modified air rifles to be classified as firearms with no issue from police when adding them to my FAC, have modified my .17hmr by shortening the barrel myself, wasn't happy with the firing pin, so I made my own, changed the bolt handle and the stock. have given the rifle to a gunsmith a few times to have it serviced and he hasn't said a word, and even said he liked my bolt handle and the shorter barrel. not a single question as to where I had it done or by who.

anyway, back to the OP, I have turned it down, and am going out tomorrow afternoon with my local firearms dealer to the range with a handful of shotguns, various gauges and types so will find one that suits me

What are you going to go for ? nice beretta or browning ? I had a miroku 7000 years ago and was sorry when i sold it , loved that gun. What are you going to be shooting ? Game or clays ?

well, to start off im just going to go for cheap and simple with something like a revo onyx. a basic o/u 12 gauge, takes a 3 inch cartridge, multi choke and all that.

a few guys I have been out with have them or similar and get on with them quite well and consider them a good starter.

after that I would be looking for either a benelli or a Winchester double barrel.

there is a miroku 7000 for sale in at my local range for £750 if you want another lol

I will be mainly shooting pigeon and bolting rabbit, but will probably shoot a fair bit of clay with it as I am a member of the local range so I can use my own clays there instead of paying over the odds for theirs. I can get 150 for 15 quid, they charge 20 quid for 50...

I was at the gunclub last week, i shoot mainly pistol (see below) but i was yapping to a lad shooting shotgun, he was showing me his benelli m3. Its both a pump action and a semi automatic, he said the american special forces use them, serious bit of kit.

ive gone off the semi auto's and pumps a bit as a lot of clay ranges don't consider them safe, and I can see why. wouldn't mind a semi for the field for ground game and pest birds though

no need for them 2 is enough. once u have shot twice everything disapears for miles, i go rough shooting with a beretta 686 its more sporting when u dont know where there coming from .heres a piccy for the anti mob

I was apprenticed as a Gunsmith, one of the London crazy price gunmakers, if the breach end is cracked bin the barrels. shotguns are only proofed at 3 or 4 ton, as opposed to a rifle at 20 tons, but if it blows you loose your face, not worth the risk.

The barrels are not hardened steel.

I wouldn't consider a shotgun with a cracked barrel which had been repaired either.

Everyone I've ever shot with an auto seemed very aware of safety and I had no qualms, but it's comforting to see guns opened when you shoot. I'm not surprised that people are wary of autos.

I've got a Browning 325 with multi chokes. It's a nice gun which I bought when I did clay shooting. However, it's no joke to carry and in rough shooting there's a good chance you're going to catch it on barbed wire and all the rest. You don't really need an ejector.

So, I also bought for £100 a second hand Spanish sbs non-ejector for walking round. It had a rubbishy looking stock extension, which made it come up very nicely, so I left it.

The bloke in the shop said that AYA Yeoman and Laurona etc didn't command more than £250 in as new condition. Ejectors were more. Things may have changed as that was a few years back.

The Spanish gets more use than the Browning.

I think you are looking at two guns if you are doing any amount of ground game and pest birds as well as clays.

I believe I have seen this pic before? not sure when or where but have definitely seen it before...

I realise that after the shot is fired everything either bolts/flies away/or drops to the ground ready for retrieval, but an auto would cut down on reloading time. which infact is the only reason I bought a 10/22 .22lr, but have sold that now as I only used it 3 times...

If you are going to have a semi-auto and you have a FAC you might as well get a higher capacity one.

The FAC ones can often be cheaper as a smaller number of buyers.

I have a 7+1 Benelli and love it.

Tend to use O/Us for clays and game.

All about the right tool for the job.

Always wanted a Browning pump when I was a teenager for lamping, 2 shots is never enough, and there's always one that sits there knowing damn well you're not going to hit it with the current game gun.

So the day came when I found one for twenty quid, 31' full coke, full mag (before the change in the law) it was in very good nick: no one wanted them.

The first night we took it out I went through more cartridges and hit less. And what I did hit was worthless as it had a massive hold in it. And I never did get to long range ones. I think I had it for a week before it was passed on.

My grandfather was a champion trap shooter in his day, won quite a few guns back then but only kept two, a Browning and a Miroku. As my brother was the eldest he got the Browning and I got the Miroku. Not sure how old they are now but they've been in the family for as long as I can remember so 30 plus years and both are great guns.

sounds like its had a three inch magnum through it,and its only tested for 2.1/4 cartridge,id say its fubar myself.profing is only fireing it with a shell of a certain size,if it holds its passed,if not its knackered.

Companies will over test at proofing, same size load but much higher pressure


I've bought wildfowl shells that are 2-3/4" yet they have a 3" load stuffed inside so you get real stopping power! Generally guns are tested with a load 2-3x greater from what I remember just to make sure they surpass all pressures

that's kind of the point I was trying to get across,that it would be shot with an higher pressure cartridge than usual.and if it shoots ok,then its ok,if not,its fubar.

Yes but if the barrel has had enough abuse to cause it to split, then the rest of the action and jointing could be and probably are toast too. Life's too short to risk having your head torn off for the sake of a few quid, chop it in half and buy a new one.
