I've had a couple of vehicle retification notices in my youth for various things, you have to then go to an mot station who will check the fault and verify the vehicle has been fixed then to the cop shop with a bit of paper to prove it.....

WRT modifications to the cars - I personally have quite a few custom made suspension and brake components on my vehicle, and although insuring the car wasn't an issue, my insurers asked for an independent engineers report on the parts before they would insure me...
There is a law that states you cannot weld on a vehicles steering or certain brake components, but its not a competancy thing, you cant do it at all, if you want diffo steering bits you can make them out of billet, but not welded parts.
There is a garage which I shouldnt mention locally that according to my welding supplier uses gas mig wire without gas!, thats gonna be a brill weld, standards are obviously widely variable.
My landy had patches all over the chasis, the mot man never asked who did the welding, one time I told him it was me and he never said owt, I think its a case of due dilligence, if you dont take the mick it'll be ok.

The "anti - political correctness / anti nanny state" crowd really do my head in.
Standards may be inadequate at times but just like the law they are open to review in the light of carefully collected stats and evidence. The law is not perfect either thats why the judicial system also includes the provision for review by INFORMED and competant people.
On average professionally taught and qualified welders will out perform the rest - there will always be exceptions but the world is full of worthless wisdom based on anecdotal evidence by a guy down the pub who has been welding 20 years blah blah blah....As soon as someone starts to justify a general position based only on personal experience rather than collected and collated information you know you are going to hear something about as meaningful and solid as political observations from your local cabbie.
Welding (only) your own car does not ring fence the problem of unqualified welding because at some stage you might sell the car on.
I am seeing exactly the kind of "I do it my way" crappy attitudes here that mark the difference between "got our act together" engineering nations like Germany and the UK. I am fed up of reading how engineering has declined because of college closures etc, I feel engineering in the UK has declined because of a general decline in attitude, a rejection of efficiency and standards and an awkward outlook not unlike a moody teenager who will not listen to superior wisdom and experience. I worked for many years in engineering software - nations like the Germans took it on whole heartedly whilst the Brits looked at it will suspicion and a fear of old skills being lost - it was not just the old skills that were lost.
No wonder the UK cant build anything any more - no-one wants to be told what to do and how to do it - we have to keep on re-inventing the wheel each generation whilst nations like the Germans who understand the need for standards, measurement and action on standards continue to outperform us. In Denmark where I currently live people are better trained and recognise the need for training - its efficient and proficient and a better and more resiliant economy emerges - wisdom in Denmark starts with properly collected information not the opinion of some sage down the local boozer who mistakenly thinks his anecdotal observations are worth two cents.

Yes something I feel quite strongly about - I am NOT actually a very nationalistic type but I do feel sadness at the decline in UK engineering - my workshop has a boxford lathe in it - from a time when British lathes were considered amongst the best, even american forums are full of praise for old British lathes.
I dont agree entirely with your evaluation of the state of engineering in the UK I think we fill the gaps more than lead.
However I think you are bang on regards pride.
If you look at the Americans and the Germans the one thing that they have is a friendly home market - its easier to develop an export market if you first of all have a loyal and proud market at home, people who will go online (and elsewhere) and add testimony to the quality of locally produced engineering items.
The worst experience I had after 20 years working on software that was used in the design of just about every modern airliner was meeting an old mate who was a tool maker who proudly told me he didnt even have a computer. He is a great guy, a great toolmaker but rejects cadcam CNC and the rest of it - I would rank him highly but when I look at his German counterpart I understand why we are not doing well - generalisations of course and an extreme example but it does capture the lousy British attitude that holds us back. Still maybe its always been around - Frank Whittle could not get any funding in his day.
Perhaps we could learn to shift our pride from being focused on us ( the individual ) onto what we make and how well we make it, as far as I understand the German psyche ( I meet a lot of Germans every day ) its all about pride in the product not quite the same as pride in the person who made it. If you genuinely want to make the best product you will accept any procedure or innovation that improves it - investing too much pride in our own personal knowledge or experience tends to limit our progression because the first step in learning is always to admit you dont know it all - people who think they know it all dont learn.

how do you test the strength of a welded car repair?..short of destructive stress measuring..you can only look at it and use your experience. .no one really knows how it will stand up in event of an accident. .steering/suspension components..should not really be subjected to excessive heat or welding ..but many vechicles use pressed steel/welded members..so repair is possible if adequately done
