stick welding exhausts?

is an exhaust system too thing for stick welding with 2.0mm rods?

the exhaust on my megane isn't original, instead of having the original one piece stainless system, it has now got front, centre and rear sections made from galv steel and cheap looking centre and back boxes.

the joint from centre to rear section is blowing, and I have tried every clamp possible to try and tighten it down to no avail. have used all things like gungum paste, the kits for wrapping the exhaust, using grease as a form of sealant but it all fails. once again the exhaust is blowing from the same spot...

anyway, I can get the exhaust off, and put it back on with the centre and rear sections joined, so I want to weld it and stop it blowing once and for all, but my mig is in bits and I only have an ac bizz box available and some 2mm or 2.5mm e6013 rods.

will I get away with welding it or will it just blow through?

no chance just touch it and it will be through

I weld them with stick,no problem,use 6013 3.25 sticks.just be careful.

3.25 stick on thin wall exhaust? what amps are you using?

don't look at that,just turn it up or down till it welds ok.

fair enough. I think I might have some scrap exhaust in the shed somewhere off my fiesta so i'll have a go on that in the morning and see how I do.

if it goes well I will post the pics

If you use a 4-6" length of the fiesta pipe and slit it length ways then slide it inside smaller pipe (open out the slit to make a snug fit then you have doubled the thickness of what you are welding!

if I can get away with it on the Renault it wont be a butt weld, it will be like you say, the centre section slid into the rear section, where the clamp usually sits, so hopefully it will work. if not I may have to re-build the mig, which will be annoying just to do one job

couldn't resist so went down the shed in hunt of the fiesta scrap exhaust...found it and have a full centre section off it, albeit with a few holes and massive tear down the middle (hence why it came off the car).

unfortunately though I have just found that I don't have any 2mm rods, only 2.5mm. so they will have to do. just have to travel quick and weld short beads at a time

yea that's about how I do it,travel fast and short bursts.still not sure on amps though,and only got 3.25 rods,must get some different sizes.

I can believe it can be done, I have used stick on 1.2mm plate before with 2.5mm rods, and had to travel fairly quick, and even then still blew a hole at the end of the run

just wanted to ask as I find pipe a bit harder to weld and have never tried stick on thin wall pipe before

im not saying it doesnt blow holes every now and then,but if you are carefull,it can be done.

well, like I said I will use your method of fast travel and short runs. if it blows a hole i'll just have to fill it in
