The old Briggs and Stratton in my opinion are the best little engine by far easy to service and run even when abused.
Yes they can kick back and yes it is painfull, usually caused in mowers by hitting a brick or obstruction that shears or deforms the key in the keyway on the main shaft Knocking the timing out .
I like the idea of the file for fileling valve stems saves the cost of a new head gasket on an old engine.I would of cause grind the teeth of the one side to save the follower.
As for the OP If it is a Magnetron type coil? disconnect the kill switch spade and see if you have a spark.
