Motorbike turnaroundythingy

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of something i can fabricate to make turning my bike around in my drive/garage easily?

My drive is quite narrow so in order to turn it round so i can easily ride it out in the morning involves a 20 point turn, which is a bit of a PITA if i'm in a hurry to put it away.

I could do with some ideas of something i could make to make this easier?

I'm aware i can spin it around on the side stand, but my drive and garage are concrete and suspect it would just make a mess of the floor.

Some sort of turntable or dolly would be ideal.

Imagine a microwave turntable and make a bigger version of that with at least twice the amount of rollers. As long as the rollers are running in grooves or the base and table have a centre shaft securing them, it can't shift off centre when turning.

You don't need a full turntable for a bike - a piece of channel with a pivot in the middle and a supporting wheel/roller at each end would do.

What bike is it, does it have a belly pan? If not you could use a MX type paddock stand with a Lazy Susan on.

It looks like it will have to be some sort of turntable, the only issues with some of those ideas are:

The dolly that goes under the back wheel still needs twice the bike length to turn it round (which i dont have & and a couple of others are for bikes with centre stands - mine only has a side stand.

The bike's a fully faired Suzuki SV1000s.. I did consider that, but sadly yes, it would destroy the fairing!

I think the only options would be some sort of turntable or a plank with castors at each end and an outrigger in the middle with a castor for the side stand.

The plank/dolly thing would work fine. Only problem with those is keeping them in place when you're shifting the bike on and off. Anything with wheels will always try to run away from you, given half a chance. You could just sink a Rawlbolt sleeve into the garage floor and use that as the locating point for your central pin, then use whichever method, either a rotating plank/dolly or a full size turntable. It'll stop whatever you use from trying to run away. Only thing you'd need to keep in mind is to wheel it on/off rather than driving on/off. The latter would make it try it's damnedest to spin underneath you.

The dolly/plank idea would probably be best, as you could keep weight minimal so that you could shift it out of the way easily if you need the garage floor clear, for any reason.

A variation of the paddock stand which will work with side stand if set correct, just needs to be wider.

Or 4 of the smallest wheels you can find set on radius of wheelbase, just ride on, get off turn bike around and ride off.

At risk of stating the bleeding obvious, can't you just jump off and reverse the bike in? I do that here as my bike weighs 300Kg and is nearly as long as the drive is wide!

That's what I thought but I'm not a biker so thought there must be a reason why it cant be done

It can. I just used the 'spin it around on the sidestand' method. If I can do it with my Hayabusa, you can do it with a SV.

I bought a stand for this purpose from Germany a few years ago, it consisted of a thick steel plate with locking wheels connected to another adjustable plate for the side stand. You just run the bikes back wheel onto the locked wheel plate and put the side stand on the other. Release the wheels then you can spin the bike easily on the front wheel anywhere. I gave it to my daughter, she can use it easily.

Debbies Discount Tools based at Rotherham I believe, does another type, where you roll all the bike onto a wheeled channel, around £60.

I've seen a channel type thing with locking castor wheels, a little ramp at one end and an outrigger thingy for the sidestand, which was adjustable for different bikes. Really brilliant. Lock it up, ride the bike on, unlock and push it wherever you want it. Saves a huge amount of garage space too.
